On top of the new combo moves and forms, they seem to have tweaked a lot of stuff about the combat. You can cancel out of finishers you couldn’t before, you can act out of air combos faster, and everything seems to just generally move a bit faster. The game feels a lot better than it did before and fighting in Sora’s base form feels much more satisfying and fun. Also, that new combo finisher kicks rear end and the new forms are just so insanely cool. Even before the DLC, this update’s just really good. This is so cliche, but i loving love seeing the fight of light and dark shown as a chessgame. This eightgame trilogy. Is this chess game going to end with thirteen pieces on xehanort and seven on obi windu before it gets cut off or somethi- oh jesus.

Like I remember exactly where and who I was in life when each of those moments happened. The game hadn't even started and I was a sobbing mess. The song isn't as good as Passion/Sanctuary IMO, but it still owns. Good luck in KH3!

I just beat KH2 FM+ for the first time! Um, I think. I know I played it back in the day but I don't think I got to the end. I played it on Critical this time, which certainly makes things more interesting and probably more fun as well. A few thoughts: gently caress Xemnas's air combo move. I still have no idea how you're supposed to survive it honestly. On my successful run, I just threw out Riku's limit so I was invincible through it. I still don't really get how you're supposed to fight Xemnas's final form, but I accidentally didn't put Reflect on a button so that might be the way. Like, he doesn't seem to actually be vulnerable in spots like after he does his lightsaber flip move. The only honest weak spot I noticed was that when he shoots the black lightning bolts you can use Reversal on while grounded, he can't punish an air combo and often staggers, but that was all I found. Thundaga... featured prominently. I can't believe the final boss fight prominently features the secret Org XIII ability to muster thousands of interstellar warships, previously featuring only in the gummi ship minigame and never being mentioned elsewhere. Why did Xemnas think sitting in a giant chair was a good battle strategy? Where's my Data Org fight against that giant X boss from Assault on the Dreadnought mission 3? I can't tell if Xemnas is supposed to read as a tragic figure. At a few moments he does (when he says he can't remember hearts being for anything other than rage and anger) but when he's just talking about wanting to be all-powerful... less so. He could have used a little more development given that he's supposed to be the main antagonist; I'm still not really sure whether he wanted his artificial Kingdom Hearts in order to become complete, become all-powerful, or something else. I also have no idea why people like Luxord were willing to die for Xemnas but oh well. It's Kingdom Hearts, it's gonna be mysterious to the detriment of its own narrative, that's the way it is. To be honest I remember Kingdom Hearts being a much better-told story than KH2 is. The opening was striking, the "council of villains" makes the Disney villains feel more tied to the plot, and I still very fondly remember Sora losing the Keyblade and making do with a wooden sword in Hollow Bastion. But well, I was a lot younger when I played KH1, it might not be as good as I remember. Sora's reunion with Riku was pretty nice, as was the visual of Sora begging Saïx for information on Kairi, but nothing really comes close to the stronger moments in the first game. The heartless feel vestigial too, which is unfortunate given you spend most of your time fighting them. Since Drive Forms represent Sora's connections with his friends, his keyblades that also represent that (Oathkeeper and Oblivion) make drive forms better. Clever. It's funny in how many ways Roxas doubles Sora. They really went all out. He even gets an edgy hooded pursuer who wants to kill him to bring back his friend. The Disney world storytelling really is not great in this game. It's just so soulless, and retelling movie plots just makes me compare the game to the actual movies, which is not a comparison that makes them look good. It was kinda nifty how Chain of Memories tries to have each story hook into the main themes of memory and identity, but KH2 doesn't even really try. Actually, come to think of it, what happens to Winnie the Pooh is probably intended to reference Roxas's plight, but that's about it. At least Tron being in Ansem's computer is a nice touch. The hardest fight so far was probably Xaldin, although it would have been easier had I gotten Once More before level 47. Sword: Not even once. I'm looking forward to grinding to level 85 so I can fight optional bosses! I miss Traverse Town. Despite all my criticisms I really enjoyed the game! Kingdom Hearts was always fun even if the bosses were often giant HP sponges, and critical mode punches it up and makes everything feel more satisfying. There's so much goofy side content too; I can't believe they have mushroom versions of every member of Organization XIII. (I laughed a lot when I realized why Mushroom XII was ignoring my Thunder spells.) I'll probably go back and try to finish off some stuff. I dunno if I'll go for the platinum trophy, given that the high score requirements for every gummi S-rank is triple the required score of the A-rank. But I'd like to at least fight some data org guys.
