On the other hand $7000 is a one time expense and that employee could work there for years.

It really is amazing how many studies have shown time and time again that the way you produce happy, more productive workers is to actually pay them well and listen to them and what they want. For how much corporations worship Data and Productivity you'd think they would actually listen. But, alas, when you're a sociopath you can't imagine why this would ever be true, so bring in the slanted toilets.

Where I am the taxi fleet was quite deregulized already and competition that was not quite as evil and retarded as Uber popped up and I use them almost exclusively now (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

I've read worse.. but if it's for spelling deregulated with 'deregulized', I wholeheartedly support it

Time to start cloning their RFID thing into a bunch of cheapo RFID tags. edit: Just checking now, can get 50 1kb RFID stickers for $15. That should last the lifetime of the fridge. At $55 per OEM cartridge, minus $12 for a 3rd party cartridge, plus $15 amortized over 50 stickers at six month intervals, that's $1060 saved over the 25 years. What the everloving gently caress, GE. If it's just RFID to recognize that an authorized filter is in there, they could just take apart the cartridge and tape the chip to a nearby surface. But I'm just gonna take a wild guess and assume the manufacturer would know people would use hardware hacks if possible and made it a software lock that won't let you use the same ID tag for 10 years. Or possibly a slightly more complicated system that includes telemetry.

Or possibly a slightly more complicated system that includes telemetry. Apparently it'll refuse to use any given filter for more than six months, so just transplanting the tag won't do the trick. One of the twitter replies linked to this method, where you can trick your fridge into thinking it's giving you unfiltered water when it's actually going through a forbidden third-party filter. This is every bit as crazy as it sounds.
