I hope the virus kills everyone. Failing that I hope it kills me. These goals are not mutually exclusive, there are multiple win conditions

If only the UK had Brexited sooner, it would have been entirely isolated from the rest of the world by the time the virus burned through the rest of the world. Now it will perish with the rest of us. Science writer AND a contributor to the NYT? This guy is less trustworthy than a fake twitter doctor.

Niton posted:I haven't done too much reading into this specific paper, but a big part of the problem is that for an emergent virus like this it's extremely difficult to tell how many people are just fighting it off effortlessly, or at home rather than seeking attention. We're still far from accurate number even if we had perfect information, and while the bad cases are scary as poo poo, there's a lot of guesswork as to how bad the "average" case actually is. That Chinese report is 41 cases that were taken to hospitals after displaying symptoms, so yeah, nothing about asymptomatic cases or people just ignoring it. Of course the people worst hit will have pneumonia, it seems like that study self-selected for the most severe cases. Also, pneumonia after or as a part of a respiratory infection is waaaaay more common than you would think, even for things as basic as rhinovirus.

Chinese state media are reporting that a second hospital, with a capacity of 1,300 beds, will be built to tackle the virus. https://www.theguardian.com/science/live/2020/jan/25/coronavirus-china-death-tolls-rises-to-41-as-france-confirms-three-cases quote:Construction has begun and is scheduled to be completed on February 3rd
