I really didn't expect them to open their defence with a bunch of pedantics about foreign policy. I mean it's all amateurish and, you know, stupid. But I expected a lot more of the mumble mumble Mueller *waves volume one of the report around vaguely* poo poo. This is both unconvincing and unlikely to produce many Fox-bait soundbites.

What's worse is that they don't even need to appeal to anyone anyway. Republicans already made their decision long before the trial so they're trying to get a fast acquittal so Donny gets to jerk off all over the microphone like the big big boy he is at the state of the union address and can cry over how unfair the Democrats have been and how America decided he was right and how he plans to maintain his obvious corruption for 4 more years-- maybe even more corrupt and more obvious because clearly, America decided that it approves.

My guess is going to be that they are going with "We can't allow evidence or witnesses, the impeachment wasn't done legally and with due process, so it's not right to remove from office."

it is also worth noting that republican voters don't particularly need anything witty or relevant or like, actually true to rally behind anyway-- we're talking about a group of people who are still butthurt about alt-righters being called deplorables and are still chanting "LOCK HER UP" in 2020 even though Hillary Clinton has not been relevant in any real perceivable significant way since 2016. all they need is a perceived slight to rally behind, no matter how small or made up, and will make an entire political stance upon it

I am surprised they even did two hours. the republicans have already made up their minds. they know that if they do not vote to acquit they will lose their elections. My only hope is that the independents make them lose their elections anyway because they have no integrity.

As a reminder, when the White House finishes, the next step is 16 hours (two days) of alternating questions submitted by both sides. Basically, both sides submit questions (to either side) and Roberts will read one dem, one republican, and repeat, for two days. Followed by four hours of "debate" and a vote on the witnesses. So if Trump's team took monday and then rested, there could be a vote on witnesses late Thursday, and if they took their full time it'd be Friday evening.

They're not even making a token effort anymore to appeal to anyone besides their base, so I think we'd just get a fake-outraged "The Fake News Media is unprofessional and biased" statement and then they'd only do friendly little softball interviews on Fox News from then on. e: I mean, I do wish with all my heart that reporters would call them on their bullshit, but the right-wing is so insular that I think it would barely matter.

Well them retreating only Fox is a double edged sword. If they do not leave their safe space pretty much every other news org will cease to carry any of their narrative at all. That being said I heard some rumblings that the Sunday shows are about to cut off certain members of the administration. I don’t know how serious that threat is but it frankly wouldn’t surprise me at this point. The Sunday shows should be a hoot tomorrow.

Then you report every single day that the government won't answer any questions on anything anymore and you explain to your audience why this is a Very Bad Thing in a democracy. You keep painting them as detached elitists who think they are so much better than you they don't even have to explain themselves to you. Basically put their contempt, for the press, for the democratic process and for the public, front and center every single day. Ofcourse, nobody gives a poo poo about contempt for the American press because American reporters are so loving garbage at their job that they are contemptible. What passes for your democratic process is also contemptible. But you know, it's up to these assholes to redeem themselves and make people give a poo poo, rather than burying their tongue in the rear end of every authoritarian they can find.

I've seen jaded alcoholic public defenders offer a better defense. The lack of refutation begs the introduction of witnesses. The opening by Pat was damning in a "we have to destroy the president in order to save him" banannas kind of way. If you are a moderate Republican you are screaming you need more thanbvb this to cover. Even Susan Collins is sentient enough that this will end her if she rolls along with an aquital. I'm chuckling at the thought of McConnell promising rewards and punishment. The man is old enough that any long term prospects of his patronage is a joke. Also mo way Trump can be trusted for a golden parachute the way he shits through appointees. There are going to be witnesses called if Monday's performance matches today. Trump can't be happy with this less than forceful performance.
