From the previously recommended Asimov book:

quote:

Franklin visualized a positive charge and negative charge as being analogous to the magnetic north and south poles, as far as attraction and repulsion was concerned. There is an important difference, however. The magnetism of the earth offered a standard method of differentiating between the magnetic poles, depending upon whether a particular pole pointed north or south. No such easy way of differentiating a positive charge from a negative charge existed.

A positive charge, according to Franklin, resulted from an excess of electric fluid, but since there is no absolute difference in behavior between "vitreous electricity" and "resinous electricity," how could one tell which electric charge represents a fluid excess and which a fluid deficit? The two forms differ only with reference to each other. Franklin was forced to guess, realizing full well that his chances of being right were only one in two-an even chance.

He decided that glass, when rubbed, gained electric fluid and was positively charged; on the other hand, when resin was rubbed it lost electric fluid and was negatively charged. Once this was decided upon, all electric charges could be determined to be positive or negative, depending on whether they were or repelled by a charge that was already determined to be positive or negative.

Ever since Franklin's day, electricians have considered the flow of electric fluid to be from the point of greatest positive concentration to the point of greatest negative concentration, the process being pictured as analogous to water flowing downhill. The tendency is always to even out the unevenness of charge distribution, lowering regions of excess and raising regions of deficit.

i've been watching this series of 1950s lectures on aerodynamics called "the secret of flight." it's really cool stuff. everything is done with physical models and smoke tunnels and it's immediately clear what is going on. the lecturer is a weird old german guy but he's very good at explaining what's happening. i think for the first time i genuinely understand how lift is formed -- not just the high school "air travels faster on the upper surface" but also why the air goes faster and all the phenomena that that entails.

this was interesting

something that I find incredibly interesting, but not because I actually *get* it

is this notion here where someone (Theodor Kaluza) was working with the precursor math and concepts to string theory

loving around with relativity, which is calculated with 4 dimensions, but added a dimension into the math (again, I get what dimensions are and I think I know what math is, but the actual meaning of this because I assume it's calculus is beyond me) and maxwells equations for electromagnetism pop out

that's quite "cool", as they say, if you ask me

negatively charged relative to what?

there's no universal law that says this particle is charged positively and this one is charged negatively. those are human constructs.

originally we got the “this” and “that” the wrong way around thinking it flowed from this to that but really the charge flows from that to this

but the human construct of an electron being negative and positrons being positive is very practical and most excellent

it's arbitrary in every possible way

it's (mostly) arbitrary to decide which direction the charges flow
it's arbitrary to decide which direction of charge flow is positive
it's arbitrary to consider positive flow to be an increase in some measured value
it's arbitrary to use a + for positive and a - for negative
it's arbitrary to use the word "positive" and "negative"

nothing really exists, the entire universe is only as real as your perception

god can you imagine the confusion there would have been if positrons had negative charge

this one is pretty timely as blizzard very visibly bodged remaking warcraft 3 in ways pretty directly called out in your video. arstechnica runs it down pretty well https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/01/warcraft-iii-reforged-not-the-flavor-of-chaos-we-were-hoping-for/. specifically they keep most of it the same, but add global illumination, a bunch of environment shaders, and more detailed meshes. however, applied to the originals handcrafted high-contrast colorful cartoony style it ends up looking incredibly flat and nondistinct.

they also messed up all kinds of other things, but it did immediately bring the video to mind on the impact hand-picking/-grading color can have.

i watched this fascinating video about the search for magnetic monopoles as a fundamental, or at least i think it's about that

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3xH97Su-KY

i don't really know much about theoretical or particle physics, so it is still really new to me, and i might have to look up more about it to really understand. to me, it never occurred to me that monopoles really ever could have existed. i'm not sure why arranging magnets and turning them so north north and south south point towards each other proves anything by being an emergent property. are you actually separating the poles? it doesn't seem like they'd have any relation at that point. you're just making an additional circumstance where two of the same poles turn towards each other. anyway, i guess i'm still unclear about that. fascinating nonetheless

it's also amazing to think because they can make up logic gates that it has possibilities with computing. though, wouldn't it be impractical still because of how cold you would need to make it to have that work?
