One of these wingtips is going to break off in flight years from now and end up through the roof of a barn in Kansas. The plane will land safely without it but the FAA will force Boeing to permanently weld the tips down

Boeing will then quietly stop welding the tips down, build a hundred forty planes like that, ask the FAA to lift the requirement, be rejected, ask again more urgently, and finally be retroactively approved.

The Boeing 737-200QC is the undisputed workhorse of the skies.
They should have put the landing gear on the tip of the wings and have the wings fold down

Think of the money they’d save on landing gear struts!

Interesting analysis of MH370 by the Royal Aeronautical Society. They think the destination was Christmas Island, and fuel ran out just short of the island and it ditched to the SE.

This is the most comprehensive technical analysis I’ve seen so far, but one of their main assumptions is that Indonesia withheld radar data that would have shown the turn to the south and transit through Indonesia’s airspace and into the Melbourne FIR.

It's really good, they reckon total electrical failure with the pilots doing everything they could to save the plane and not accidentally run into anyone.

Yeah I dunno which one seems more likely

A) Total electrical failure of a type never before or since experienced in a Boeing 777, leaving the engines and flight controls operative, followed by the pilots veering off course and out of radar contact with any authorities, when even blind following of the backup magnetic compass back the way they came would undoubtedly have gotten them back near land

B) The senior pilot of the flight, whose marriage had collapsed earlier in the year after he repeatedly cheated with flight attendants, who became obsessed with a pair of Instagram models, who was rumored by many of his coworkers to be clinically depressed, who had repeatedly flown fuel-exhaustion profiles in a a 777 in his home flight simulator, incapacitated his copilot and committed suicide

To add to that, A) has never happened but B) has one recent confirmed case and at least one other probable that I know of.

The real tragedy was that he had his 13yo daughter on board. It wasn't a chartered helicopter service, either - it was his own personal S-76.

People (not just celebrities) need to stop taking unnecessary helicopter rides.

Statistics on fatalities I’m seeing say helicopters are between 27 to 85 times more dangerous than driving a car. Motorcycles are about 35 times more dangerous.

I know LA is infamous for famous people using helicopters so they don't have to slum in traffic in the back of a Maybach or limo, but I think if you're taking a helicopter ride of less than fifty miles, there should be a decent reason to add your tail code to the boards. Being flashy doesn't/shouldn't qualify.

Flying a Cessna 172 is only 15 times as dangerous as driving a car (by fatalities per operating hour) so clearly that's the way to go

He had the money and the training. I’m not gonna bag on him for opting to fly rather than drive. In fact, that’s probably aspirational goals for many of us here to enjoy the privilege of flying our own aircraft often.
