Apparently Shantou is going into lockdown tomorrow with another city. Shantou is like 800km from Wuhan, and has only had like 2 cases thus far(I haven't been able to find confirmation of this). What the actual gently caress is going on. A chart of international infections. Overall cases by date: Buckle your pantalones Zotix fucked around with this message at 05:03 on Jan 26, 2020 |

There are no known infections in Africa or India, right? That seems doubtful to me given the volume of traffic between China and them. If it gets a foot hold in either of those two, there ain't no going back. This isn't like Ebola where blood is pouring from places it shouldn't and it's obvious you're very sick. It starts off with normal cold symptoms.

Speaking as another immunocompromised person in this thread (and Canada), my advice would simply be to take all the reasonable precautions you can, wash your hands religiously (even if you aren't otherwise), especially every chance you get while outside, touch as few surfaces outside your home as possible, and if it comes down to it, maybe extend these precautions to your food shopping, buying only sealed food products (that you can wipe down before opening/handling), and so forth, and that last bit there is actually more paranoid than I'd advise, really. I have a medical appointment at a major hospital on february third, so...looking forward to that, myself.

Stopped off on the way home at my local Asian supermarket and about 5min in someone coughed and suddenly I remembered this thing could be anywhere now and is already possibly in a hospital 30miles away https://www.cpr.org/2020/01/24/colorado-has-its-first-potential-case-of-the-wuhan-coronavirus-cdphe-says/

I'm nervous this upcoming week because I work in downtown, and I normally drive to a train station and take the train since my job pays for unlimited train rides monthly. On the weekends I've been parking downtown since it's only $6/d as opposed to $20/d normally. The trains first stop is the airport, and goes all the way downtown so a ton of international visitors catch ride the train to downtown and stay at hotels and attend conventions downtown. I'm considering Monday to figure out a different solution, because uhhh those trains are usually loving awful for bacteria, and each day this thing has potential to be anywhere.

This is the poo poo that causes the real damage in a pandemic situation. People get freaked out and stop doing stuff so the economy tanks. Breh you’re more likely to be gunned down in the street by a lunatic or a cop than you are to catch the Fluhan. Chill and be normal.

I feel like, statistically, as we look at how many people leaving Wuhan have ended up in different countries and possibly positive for the virus, there’s no way the infection numbers are only in the thousands...there must be thousands of people infected who cannot afford to fly out of Wuhan, or have no reason to leave, for every one person who can and is also infected.

The report I linked last night said that only 5% of cases have actually been identified. Add to the fact that the poor dont generally go to the hospital the number is most likely significantly higher. 60,000-70,000

This is exactly what happened with SARS. A doctor treating victims went to Hong Kong for one night, stayed in a hotel and infected everyone on his floor who then spread it across the world. If a super spreader was at the Wuhan Airport, this makes sense. I could also be in denial of how bad it is and trying to rationalize best case scenarios idk.

This guy (from European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, ecdc.europa.eu, https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Pasi_Penttinen) gave an interview to Finnish media stating that based on the information received on the first treated patients in China we're looking at a reasonably severe disease. Whatever that means. Anyway, they had a look at the documented symptoms of the first 40 victims of the 2019-nCoV admitted to hospitals in China.

Its hard to overstate how much of a giant constant super overcrowded clusterfuck the entire public transportation system of China is during CNY. Hundreds of millions of people all travel from wherever they moved to work back to wherever they are from, at the same time, then travel back. Its not uncommon for people to spend 18 hours packed together in standing-room-only trains, for more than one day in a row, with different people on different days, and people constantly getting on and off to go some other direction for 18 hours. Like 1/4 of the people in China all zig zag back and forth across the country via overcrowded packed-in trains busses and planes during these weeks. Anything to do with transport is 200% overcrowded 24 hours a day with people going every possible different place at once.
