bob dobbs is dead posted:Yeah, the timing couldn't have been worse. It's the largest human migration Ya, but "human migration" sort of connotes people all going one place, like birds migrating, or some kind of order. It’s everyone all going different places, every far flung corner of the country, criss-crossing and zig-zagging and everything to do with transportation being hellaciously overcrowded all the time, and then after an interval doing it all again and returning to the big developed cities.

this is funny to me personally because like fifteen years ago i read an amateur sci fi story on fictionpress.com where civilisation was wiped out by a pandemic and the protagonist found out about it through something awful. it was one of those things where i would never have read it all the way through voluntarily, but they'd reviewed every chapter of my fic and so i was morally obligated to do the same for them. it has always stuck in my memory because the author was apparently afraid to use the name something awful, instead it was called "that's terrible", and because the protagonist had sex with a corpse

just in case the writer of that fic is reading this, i'd like to add that it was otherwise pretty good

Most foreign news outlets plus all social media are blocked by the great chinese firewall, so I'm down to Finnish national news and local rumors. In Guangdong, even in places like Zhanjiang, the chinese are closing poo poo down. Zhanjiang city has a toll bridge leading to surrounding islands, which I hear is being shut down for the night and potenatially closed to islandbound traffic. Keep in mind Guandong has very few infected much less dead. They've dug out the infrared cameras at airports, bus stations and railway stations from the last round of infectious disease. Everywhere you go, even in a middle-of-nowhere city, about 30% of people wear cheap useless face masks. Local Chinese New Year events are canceled, including lion dancers moving between villages. From what I hear, less than 100 people are dead from Wuhan Snakeflu. In a country of over a billion people. Compare that to your run of the mill seasonal influenza, which never makes the news, but get a new viral strain in Asia and people loose their minds.
