Its unfortunate how privatised healthcare is that people feel they have to sell a "disaster" online to get a $ bump for their department

Its interesting how shutting down a city is so easy for cops, the biggest lesson to come from this

Turning on and off the internet is when?

So what's the actual risk of this thing. All I've read suggested that it's a slightly more dangerous flu, but nothing really ground-breaking?

Doesn't matter, if it made it to the US and was an issue you dont have any resources to combat it, because you keep voting austerity and small government and anti science. You've de-funded every weapon against it.

Its no the "risk" or whatever, all you need to ask is how much does it hurt?

Will i die in pain or not

Looking at CDC data, influenza kills 2 out of 100,000. Wuhan has a rough population of 11 million and less than 100 dead. If the new virus was as deadly as the yearly influenza, we'd be looking at 200+ dead and we're not. The actual risk of this is stupid.

It could be about as deadly, it could be 100x as deadly. Difference between thousands and millions severely affected

We've been continually been getting reports that about 10% of cases end up in the ICU, all told, including some young peeps who lived and recovered. The flu doesn't do that, but peeps from the PRC have a weird attitude about going to hospitals in the first place

I'm more sure that this was a bioweapon that got released accidentally. Somehow China managed to get the genetic code information perfectly sequenced and they're now sharing it with various medical groups to develop a vaccine. How quickly does it take to sequence a new never seen before virus?

Hours, nowadays.

Genome sequencing went down 99.9999% in price in the last 15 years. Faster than Moore's Law. First one cost like 50 million bucks, nowadays charging 50 bucks for a human gives you a big fat margin

Bioweapon thing would be more, not less, deadly than SARS.

Peeps from the PRC go to the hospital for a common cold, and get a drip. They are given a saline solution, and antibiotic solution and maybe some intravenous nutrition to boot.

Right now, the Snake Flu is the main subject of conversation at dinner table (aside form "how's business? Are you earning money?") and people are scared enough to go see the doc for anything and everything.

Not necessarily. A super bug that kills people dead is more effective if you want to end the world like a supervillain but less so if you wanted to drastically tie up an opposing nation's resources.

It takes way more resources to keep a sick person from becoming a dead person than it does to deal with a dead person.

Infected objects for coronaviruses usually stop being infectious after 10 hours away from the body, unless kept in a warm but not too warm liquid environment. Still a problem for public transport but lol for shipping

With current data, including the current cases out of Thailand, it is looking like it sucks, it will probably wreck all the usual at risk populations, it may spread widely due to it having a level of infectiousness a bit above Influenza A and B (only in asymptomatic shedding from what I can gather) and should be taken seriously. It also will not be 1918 (if these trends hold) and like, medical tech then was not medical tech now folks, that was 102 years ago and a lot of the big advances in care are after that. Basically, governments need to take this seriously and precautions are needed but like, I would be more worried about dying in a car crash or something.

But we need better data than China's poo poo.

The point of wet markets is to have your meat before rigor mortis sets in. Probably even possible hygienically and with minimal pain to animals with skilled and experienced butchers who know about hygiene and stuff, and refrigeration and dedicated cleaners and stuff. Lol at that happening in PRC tho. And you shouldnt sell wild animals at all, especially endangered ones, which they totally did

It'll be just our luck that the 21st century version of the Spanish Flu is something more contagious but just leaves you wrecked for a week or two instead of killing you.

If it is similar to SARS, it's not 2 weeks and back to normal, a number of those patients have debilitating long term disabilities, are unable to care for themselves, and some even have PTSD (health care workers definitively do). Also, not sure what the psychological ramifications of being locked away in quarantine for a full month is, but I bet it isnt good.

We have 90000 ICU beds in the US. They're usually at 60% capacity. 50000 ICU beds in PRC, also usually at that capacity. So if we continue exponential growth those will fill up insanely quickly. We have the technology, but it's not scaled to the total population, it's scaled to like 0.01% of the pop

There are A LOT of social factors to consider and right now any one of them, be it widespread panic messing things up, or not enough care if it spreads and is severe (like, gotta wait on that one because again, bad data so far) or like mentioned, the toll on healthcare workers and surviving hospitalized infected (which may not be all infected, gotta keep that in mind), are all WAAAAAY more concerning than the actual virus.

This is why sociology and anthropology matter, they look at that stuff.

I nearly bought some of the PPE gear people mentioned in the thread (yeah I know)..
But in my defense, before I made my mind up I did a quick 10 min google..

Correct me if I wrong...

The best PPE stuff I found on amazon was good for stuff down to 0.03 microns, virus's are anywhere from 30-400 nanometers.
0.03 microns is 3000 nanometers.

I also spoke to a mate who's been in the military & he just lol'd & said you need the 'bio' filters for that..

We are fairly sure its not airborne proper, it's spread by aerosolized droplets that are bigger. So tiny droplets of snot w virus, not floating virus particles. Also fomites, or infected stuff

Smallpox, you deffo need the bio dealios

N95 masks were 85% effective against SARS, 96% with facemask. Not perfect but drat sight better than nothing

That was my thinking but my mate made me concerned it would be a false sense of security.

Though to be fair I know next to nothing about filters.
