Yeah I mean just ignore they locked down like 50 million people in China and it's still spreading and much higher mortality rate than any recent flu variant. There is no way in hell our medical system in US could handle this if it broke out.

I nearly bought some of the PPE gear people mentioned in the thread (yeah I know)..
But in my defense, before I made my mind up I did a quick 10 min google..

Correct me if I wrong...

The best PPE stuff I found on amazon was good for stuff down to 0.03 microns, virus's are anywhere from 30-400 nanometers.
0.03 microns is 3000 nanometers.

I also spoke to a mate who's been in the military & he just lol'd & said you need the 'bio' filters for that..

0.03 microns is 30 nanometers

Clearly this means you need to spring for the Level A Hazmat suit or you're doomed.

But seriously, just follow similar precautions like you would do for the cold and flu. You're more likely to get sick from like the dozens of other illnesses that are already spread around than from this.

This got brought up in the Disney thread, but the Chinese Disney parks seem to be down for the duration. If someone already dropped it at WDW or Disneyland, poo poo's gonna spread pretty quick. Any of the amusement parks, really, in Orlando or LA. No matter how clean they are, it's impossible to disinfect at that level of commitment.

Have they shut down the areas of China that make all the stuff we import? That's when you'll see ramifications here even if it doesn't end up sweeping through.

Also glad I just got my 3 month supply of insulin and pump supplies(t1 diabetic). But I'm still hosed probably if this thing disrupts normal work flow badly enough.

Also if our officials did find out this was outbreak the movie levels of bad would they even tell us? Wouldn't that cause insane amounts of panic?

Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, says he doesn't know of any instances of coronaviruses being contagious during incubation, so there's a decent chance the Chinese minster was wrong or was given bad info. He didn't give any details or specify what led to that conclusion.

"There is a possibility that it is contagious during incubation" would be much different than "it is contagious during incubation".

Acting like it's fact without any given evidence leads to things like entire cities being shut down and people in a constant state of suspicious fear over whether or not they or anyone around them could be sick. Not sharing fairly groundbreaking facts with any other health organisations around the world is deeply irresponsible as well as pretty suspicious.

Assumptions like that are not neutral and they do have negative consequences. If it's not true (or if they don't have drat good evidence that it is at least a good possibility), it's going to seriously impede efforts to track down legitimate cases because suddenly field workers need to track down vast swathes of a population. Case histories are a nightmare when you have to try to pinpoint even a single person's movements for an entire two week period and follow up with every single person they came into contact with. It slows down the very important field work necessary to track what a virus is doing and how it is impacting a population. That's before you even get to things like mass quarantines, panic, overcrowding in hospitals and clinics from scared people who no longer have any idea if they could be contagious or sick, etc.

The spread of information is critical during any kind of public health crisis, but that information needs to be accurate, and people need to be able to have confidence in what public officials tell them.

KiteAuraan posted:

Yeah, it is a common enough trait in other viruses to just sort of always assume when you encounter anything novel.

"virus" covers an enormous range of different pathogens, and different families of virus behave very differently. One group of viruses commonly being contagious during the incubation period isn't that relevant to another group of viruses that have never previously been contagious during incubation. It's similar to how some viruses can spread through the air, while others require contact with bodily fluids. They don't all just mutate to have the same traits.

If they have evidence that a coronavirus has mutated to the point that it is now contagious during incubation period, that is really huge, and it's really important for everyone working in epidemiology to know the details ASAP, not some public statement without sharing any details with anyone else. Right now, there's a lot of people saying a lot of things because everyone is desperate for information, but accurate information takes time.

It *could* be true, but it's a really huge claim to make without any further explanation. A more cynical explanation would be that saying people are infectious for up to two weeks before showing symptoms gives the Chinese government enormous scope in limiting freedom of movement and shutting down access to services across the country.
