There are subtitles, turn them on via the CC button.

I don't know how legitimate this video is (Not only do I obviously not speak Chinese, I'm deaf and couldn't confirm anyway that he's actually saying what the subtitles show that he's saying) but his body language and gestures match up with the subs.

tldw: The officials aren't communicating well, there's little to no instruction on what to do beyond "wear masks" and "don't go out", the guy is upset about the leaders "loving off to some island in Qing Hai" (this made me raise my eyebrow -- Qinghai is landlocked), and talks a little bit about what it's like to go to a hospital right now in Wuhan. He says they've ran out of testing solutions.

It could be a CIA psyop video to spread misinformation, who knows.

The lockdown has shut down all transportation (metro, busses, private cars). However, some institutions are allowed to have cars. For example, my university has let all the teachers know that if we need groceries resupplied, we can contact them and they have an authorized car to make the grocery run.

Social media is not locked down at all. WeChat is still totally open. People there are rallying for supply donations, exactly the same as we would do with the Red Cross. They help spread the word about the pop-up clinics to handle in patients because the hospitals are overrun.

Y'all are aware of the great firewall, but that's an everyday thing and not in any way related to the virus. In fact, they haven't even locked it down more the way they do for major holidays. My VPN is working just fine, for example.

What's communication from the officials like?
Lot's of posts telling people to stay in, exercise, eat lightly. Word about the pop-up clinics is spread this way too. I get the posts from my university administration.

Meh. Same as any video of people criticizing politicians I've ever seen. He's wrong about there being no warning for this. The first alert that I got was December 31st, announcing that a number of cases of pneumonia were reported, and that we should not go out to public places. Of course everyone ignored it at the time, cause that's what people do. But people will always criticize the response time / lack of response / over response.

treatment for viral pneumonia isn't something that works with any sort of certainty, especially if you have an already compromised immune system.

i mean, CAP has about a 3% mortality rate in non-hospitalized populations, closer to 6-10% in hospital settings and it just climbs from there. If you need "all rescue measures," your survival rate is no better than 50%.

tbf a two-week infectious incubation period is pretty loving bananas, there isn't a huge amount you can actually DO about it. With an r0 between 3 and 5, by the time Patient Zero starts showing actual symptoms they could have infected 9-25 people, who could go on to infect the same number of people before THEY start showing symptoms. What China is doing now (full quarantine/travel ban) is basically the only tactic with any hope of success.

No. All of my friends that are here are fine, and everyone is very measured about the whole thing. Many of them went to their hometowns, and even there they are being instructed by the local police to stay in their home for 7 days, and report their health each day. Beyond the small annoyance, everyone completely understands.

I'm sure you all have seen the video of the hospital that will be done in 6 days. It is still amazing to me how quickly China can mobilize.

So far just fine. People stocked up a bit, but the only 'panic level' pictures I saw were just the instant noodles shelves almost empty 😂 The rest of the grocery was totally normal. Some grocery stores were waaay upcharging for veggies, but the govt stepped in and told them to stop doing that, so they did.

I had viral pneumonia as a healthy 14 year old and I went from 110lbs to 90lbs and I literally don't remember those 2 weeks of my life. I wasn't hospitalized but it was all a wheezy exhausting blur. The doctors treated the symptoms where they could but I guess it was mostly a waiting game.
I can't imagine anyone who isn't perfectly healthy dealing with it very well.

The fish here is sooooo tasty, but I avoid it because they leave the bones in. One of my students had to go to the hospital to get one removed from her throat, so, uh, pass the pork.

its pretty important to note that not all cases of coronavirus turn into pneumonia and, more than just "not all cases," it may end up being a relatively small percentage limited to people with seriously compromised immune systems. There's certainly plenty of discussion right now that a lot of people manifest the virus with very mild or no symptoms at all.

300 people critically ill from a viral disease with a rapid epidemic growth is more than reason enough to take it serious.

are there any models that show the expected time for the virus to be eliminated, with the consideration that this virus is able to reinfect previously infected hosts?
