I just looked this up and so far the descriptions are suspiciously lacking when it comes to talking about what it actually tastes like - wikipedia has literally nothing whatsoever to say about the flavour (even in Norwegian wikipedia, the description is just 'Osten har en fyldig og skarp smak').
I think that's a bit ominous.

It does has a rich and sharp flavor. There was actually a song made about gammelost:

It was a viking who for the first time took
a pot full of sour milk and sat it on to cook.
It smelled so sour that he certainly couldn't rest,
so he poured it in a bucket and buried the bucket down.

And the bucket stood in in the pig sty, and the pig sty was behind the outhouse,
and the smell bothered no one, and the grass began to grow,
and the days became weeks, and winter became spring,
and the bucket stood in the muck for 800 years.

One spring day in 1659
the bucket came up where a bear had his den.
And the farmer who found it was hungry and starving.
He said "It stinks something awful, but tastes right good!"

And hey and ho and so he washed down with a dram,
and a-hey and a-ho, that taste wasn't tame,
and hop and hicc and hack and cough.
Oh, you freshly-fried devil! That was some kind of cheese!

CHORUS:
Hu hei! Gammalost for breakfast, gammelost for midday,
gammalost at midafternoon and gammelost in the evenings.

You can snuff it or chew it or smoke it like tobacco
take it as an enema and flambe' it in cognac.
And when it becomes so old that it begins to be callous,
you can take it with to the opera and let it sing itself.

So it's indestructible and sustaining - it's clearly the original dwarf bread.

This one might actually have potential. Pineapple and kiwis do taste similar in regards to their citric acid bite and tangyness.

You know what, gently caress it, I'd try this one, albeit with my eyes closed thinking of a sunny pasture somewhere far away

Porpoise noise continues.
Kiwi is okay in my experience if it's green kiwi. Yellow kiwi is too sweet and mushy.

Banana is vile.

Durian is delicious; if you like honey and gorgonzola pizza, you will like durian pizza.

Blueberries are horrible, although I've only had them in the form of blueberry syrup.

Figs are pretty good.

Preserved lemon is GREAT on pizza. I bet thinly-sliced green apple or pear would be okay, too.

The full recipe lists this as a quantity for 4 people.

You can cross off jellied eels from your list without even traveling to the UK. Here’s a recipe - get a pen and paper and write down things you want to eat. Afterwards, if you wrote down jellied eels, go ahead and cross that one off.

Eel is an acquired taste I think, but they're pretty great when prepared any other way except jellied. There's an eel fishery about 20 miles from me that exports them as a delicacy all across Europe. And so a bunch of the fancier restaurants around here often have eel dishes on the menu, usually with produce caught the same day.

Like so many foods, the source ingredient isn't the issue. The problem is letting the English cook it.

I dip in and out of this thread so I'm not sure if KAYS COOKING has appeared in here before, but it absolutely belongs.

Never been a fan of Omu-rice simply because it's always coated in ketchup. If it was just like hollandaise or some chives it would be great.

Omurice beautifully presented and omurice sloppily presented are the same meal, basically; as someone that had only seen it on TV and in Cooking Mama, I thought it would would be sort of luxurious, but lol, no, it's basically tater tot casserole from another mother.

Omrice restaurants often offer a good variety of sauces apart from ketchup: cream sauce (great with crab croquettes), demiglace, and Bolognese are a few I remember having tried. There's a cafe in Kyoto that tops omrice with beef stew (with potato wedges, yum), green curry, Japanese curry, and a few other interesting things. Their omrice with prosciutto was probably the best thing I ate on my last trip.

I've never eaten eel, but what stands out to me is just how much blood they had relative to their size in one youtube video on London's oldest fast food place. The final product doesn't look too attractive either, but that's not the eels' fault. Mashed potato and ground beef pie in a green sauce in bad lighting just looks kinda sad.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogfyJICT9aI

And of course, the reason it really struck me how much blood they had when they were butchered was because I had gone down a youtube hole of videos of seafood being prepared, often in little street stalls, mostly on this channel. I watched more invertebrates like crab and snail, but even the big ol' fish didn't have nearly the amount of blood eels do. I'm sure most mammals and birds are full of blood too, but I just haven't seen those.

Content warning: Like I said, animals being butchered.

I ended up making my own version with demiglace mixed with soy sauce and it's pretty tasty. Katsu sauce is also a good choice, especially for the topping.
