Dude it can't be as bad as Japan. At least they're putting them in remote places.

Japan: Let's fly them into TOKYO and put them through the normal Narita airport and then ask them to kindly take the train home and not leave. Or take a car or stay in the hotel.
They also hospitalized 5 people that were apparently severely infected on the same flight.

I am NOT kidding. You can read it yourself here (use Google translate):

Some important cultural context

Hello everybody! Like you, I have been glued to the news for the last few days. Like you, I'm not sure how bad this will be, but I fear it could be pretty bad. The news has been getting bad and looking worse very quickly.

But I think it's important to provide some cultural context for what you're seeing, to properly understand what is going on.

I lived in Chengdu, China for a couple years about a decade ago. I can't say I'm an expert, but I can provide some information that is missing for some people here.

First off, the Chinese people are susceptible to mass panics. They trust the word of the Chinese government even less than you do, so much information is transmitted through group chats or text forwards. These can race around a city at an utterly mind-boggling speed and cause huge reactions as rumors fly out of control. In my time I witnessed several.

The most pertinent examples occurred after to the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. While there was little damage to the city, there were an incredible number of aftershocks. In the four days after the earthquake alone, there were 4,400. In the week after the earthquake, the city went insane in a way I have never seen before or since. People truly thought the world was going to end.

People would line up daily at stores to buy tents so they could sleep outside, and a friend of mine witnessed two women fighting over the last one (like videos that have gotten out about women fighting over produce). Friends who were teachers said that parents were pulling their children from schools, going to the airport, and buying seats on the next flight out, wherever it went.

Minutes after one particularly strong aftershock, my friend's phone lit up. A building had collapsed and fallen into the river. My friend broke down from the stress of it all and the general sense of doom. (Note--it turned out no building actually collapsed). One day I heard a chemical plant had fallen into the city's reservoir, and that night I found a supermarket almost completely cleaned out of all drinks. I heard that at some point during the day, enough people had stopped using water that it messed with the water pressure for the whole city, and so water actually stopped flowing temporarily (though I didn't confirm this myself).

The wildest event happened a week after the quake. I was out eating dinner with friends late at night when we suddenly realized the street was utterly clogged with cars and people. Confused, we asked the waiter what was going on. He said that some official had gone on TV and predicted that there would be a large earthquake tomorrow. That's insane. You can't predict earthquakes. We turned on the TV in the restaurant but couldn't find anything--because it's insane. But somehow, EVERYBODY knew this. The whole goddamn city.

I have never been so bewildered in my life as my friends and I walked back to our local bar, witnessing every single street vendor rolling up their shop and dragging cots and blankets out to sleep on the sidewalk. Every street was a giant traffic jam. The bar, of course, was closing too. We went to my building and got up onto the roof. In every single direction, all you could see were taillights, as the entire loving city of ten million people emptied out overnight. I just kept repeating "...but you can't predict earthquakes!". I cannot describe to you the feeling of an entire city of people losing their goddamn minds around you. Everyone with a car got in it, drove out of the city, and pulled over and slept on the side of the highway as soon as they could find space. The next day, the city was a ghost town. Again, all based on a rumor we couldn't confirm.

I do not trust the official government numbers. But I trust the rumors even less. The truth is probably somewhere between the two, and very likely closer to the government figures than the wildest rumors you hear online.

So when you see images of packed hospitals, or empty streets, or occasional fights over food and empty shelves--this is the Chinese panicking, moreso than it is a true expression of the disease. That said, many of these panicked reactions (such as packing hospitals) will increase the rate of infection. There are some other reasons hospitals are packed right now.

The Chinese take IV-drips for almost everything. So even slightly fevers are often responded to with hospital visits. Here is a Reddit explanation from years ago.
https://www.reddit.com/r/China/comments/2w5jy9/eli5_why_so_many_iv_drips_in_china/

China one GP per 7,000 people, compared to the international standard of one for every 1,500 to 2,000 people, as recommended by the World Health Organization.

So hospitals are overwhelmed and understaffed in part because people are panicking and the medical infrastructure in China is not very good. I do expect that rates of infection for the virus are worse than the official numbers, and I expect that it will spread globally, but I also think the images you're seeing from China might be giving you a false idea of how bad it will be, because we're seeing the panic more than the disease itself. In addition, many videos you see online of people talking to the camera are based on rumors. We're reaching a place where the real contagion here is fear, not the disease.

Take measures to protect yourself from both.

Got driven to the grocery store today by a community vehicle. We got our temperature taken before getting in, and again at the entrance of the supermarket. Everyone is wearing a mask. And then... normal shopping. People are totally calm. I'm not sure I agree with that long post about Chinese people being susceptible to mass panic. People here in Wuhan at least are pretty pragmatic, and in my neighborhood everyone is totally normal (minus everything being closed, and the 100% mask rate).

I know someone on the plane that landed in AK. She decided to get on because she had a young kid. I know you all are joking about them bringing the virus, but she had to be at the airport at 6am to get tested all day for a 10pm flight. That plane is probably the least infected place on earth.
