We had yearly recurrent OSHA training this morning. Our safety guy identified oxidizer diamonds as 'flammable', toxin diamonds as 'dangerous', and managed to read off a sentence that read 'radioactive: emits radiation' as 'reaction: eliminates radioactivity'. This same safety guy told me we didnt have any pull apart zip ties so I could just use a regular zip tie to retain a fire extinguisher pin (it's ok, he knows the fire marshal for the town). I do not know how this guy got hired, I feel like I should be allowed to challenge him for his job in OSHAdome

The zip tie thing sounds like something that would get somebody busted for manslaughter in a sane world.

In case there was any question about the zip ties, I have to confess I did the wrong thing. I did not report that direction to the internal safety managers above him and every relevant state and federal agency.

Uthor posted:Did X2: X-Men United lie to me? Love that movie. Some personal questionable safety: Our building is a massive vehicle workshop, and this includes parking for said vehicles outside the building for storage. Our shop inside the building is for a specialized purpose: electronics and more importantly optical systems, which means a sealed environment and positive pressure in the clean rooms. Well and good... Until the air intakes are placed on the exterior wall... about 20 feet up. You know, where the exhaust from running/idling vehicles can be sucked straight in and pumped into our sealed rooms. Which means that every so often we get really spicy air in our rooms and have to flee, and yell at mechanics to move their vehicles away from the intakes. The really fun part is that these are monster vehicles, and the diesel engines pump out enough fun gas that if the wind is right, they can be 50+ meters away and still gas our workshop. And no we dont have detectors in our rooms. Hah no only on the work floors and garages. DarkDobe fucked around with this message at 19:45 on Jan 29, 2020 |

Some train-fuckling. Something tells me this isn't good for the engineers and conductors lungs, especially if they broke down in the tunnel and had to evacuate. Check the guy sitting by the window about 10 cars back. Also I imagine the heat+smoke isn't a good combination for loving flammable oil cars. But hey I'm no train driver On top of that these engines must be a nightmare to maintain. RIP anybody who thought it would be a good idea to train surf on thais line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXpTRpn_fuQ The Real Amethyst fucked around with this message at 20:09 on Jan 29, 2020 |

MisterOblivious posted:The "cables" that connect the antenna to the transmitter are copper pipes that bolt together. Going all the way back here, but yeah, hollow copper pipes of considerable measures are transmission lines for broadcast equipment. And with the price of copper these days... I hear tell a nearby comms array put their satellite pipes under 3-5 feet of concrete, but that might be only a slight exaggeration. Broadcast lines aren't as threatened by scrap poachers, but that's because the equipment is usually surrounded by fritterizing levels of energized sources. "It smells terrible, but it's just going to have to bake until it goes down for maintenance. Not going to shut the thing down for something like that, and nobody wants to put on the insulated gloves and grounding lines just to clear the air, and you're only going to be smelling it for what, 10, 15 minutes tops?" - An electrical engineer commenting about a raccoon that touched the bus bar
