Radish posted:The only ethos of the Democratic party is "the leadership is an aristocratic class that is beyond criticism" and any sort of identity politics messaging they use is just to service that like the idiot yesterday saying Hillary was the black man of 2016. Rich white people like Pelosi and Chelsea Clinton telling Omar the Somalian refugee she needs to understand racism was another example. The next part of that story was a student telling Chelsea off to which every Twitter blue check mark decided the appropriate reaction was to weaponize Chelsea's pregnancy like have a conversation was going to cause her to miscarry and start slandering a 20 year old with no power whatsoever. They have absolutely no shame. Somali. Somalian isn’t a word

Soup du Jour posted:gen x got completely owned by the neoliberal gerontocracy lol They really did fall in a sweet spot of succ. Close enough to smell the plunder from neoliberal capitalism but never actually close to taste it themselves. Traditional organizing methods were kind of dead. The establishment still had a monopoly on media and power so any left movement got stamped out and completely marginalized. The internet really did change how we can organize and inform ourselves and the Battle of Seattle could have been viewed by X'ers the way Occupy was a generation later had they had it in their toolkit. On the other side, you have the X'ers who bought in that have been carrying water and kissing the feet of a bunch of decrepit Skeksi who will hold onto power until their gnarled talons turn to dust. Now, well into their 50s when it finally looks like their cryptoid masters might actually keel over and die, a revolution is gaining ground that will throw them all out on their asses. So the bottom half that could smell the rot never had to tools to build an alternative narrative at scale and organize around it and the top half toadied the gently caress up their whole lives so they could finally Get Theirs but it turns out getting theirs in the end just means getting completely loving owned. The former is a tragedy but the later is completely loving hilarious.

It wouldn't surprise me if Bernie's campaign made similar overtures to Gabbard or Yang either directly to their campaigns or indirectly through supporters who have been ID'ed as having Bernie for a second choice. This kind of approach is crucial to winning caucuses. I'm sure Bernie precinct captains are all being coached on how to appeal to each candidate's supporters in the event they're non-viable after the first round has been counted. Yeah the campaign's been putting a lot of emphasis on getting non-Bernie voters' second-choice candidates for this exact reason. Asking the other campaigns directly just seems mental tho

Soup du Jour posted:gen x got completely owned by the neoliberal gerontocracy lol still relevant: Why We Cannot Nominate a Young Person in 2020 quote:From the point of view of the left, the 40-60 group is a lost generation. It’s an entire generation of American politicians who were taught all the wrong things. They were taught that to win in American politics, you go to the center. They were taught that to win as a Democrat, you distance yourself from “liberal” and “progressive” and “socialist”. You demonstrate “fiscal responsibility” by offering to “reform” entitlements or welfare. You take meetings with bankers and CEOs, because they have the money you need for your next campaign. If you lose, you take a cushy job working for a lobbying firm or a thinktank until you’re ready to try again. You don’t want to upset those guys while you’re in office, because they are your safety landing. And if you get back into office again, you want to repay them for taking care of you during your wilderness years. You talk a big game on climate change, but you quietly support fracking. You are careful about getting into bed with radical policies. Single payer, tuition-free college, big infrastructure bills–only nutty Europeans do stuff like that. After all, we’re a big country, and we’re culturally center-right. We’re not like Denmark. This is how they think. This is normal to them. They might pretend to be left-wing to win over primary voters, but everyone knew in the 00s that you pretend to be left-wing in the primaries and then pull to the center for the general.
