one place im worried about it spreading is Myanmar. yunnan has had a decent number of cases, and it is a very porous border with Myanmar. a lot of Myanmar is still run by militias, paramilitary groups, organized crime. government authority is limited or nonexistent especially along the chinese border, & healthcare there is also... not good. there would be little to no way to enforce quarantines there.

hell its entirely possible its already there, and it would probably take hundreds of cases before it was somehow reported.

fuuuuuuuuuck that's a good point, epidemics would hit less-organized states a lot differently than what we are used to thinking about

maybe a dumb question but would all of the infection graphs look even remotely as scary if they were operating under the assumption that this all kicked off like almost two months ago instead of when china finally recognized it officially?

sounds like a lot of experts think it was bouncing around at least as far back as december and maybe even into november, but i guess there's no way you could quantify any of that since any infections / deaths probably just got rolled into regular flu or pneumonia numbers

I remember that testing blood samples from the 50s found confirmed HIV cases, and showed with some good modeling that HIV probably started before WWI....

If that worked, the virus never would have spread through China in the first place.

On January 28, three additional employees at the company tested positive for 2019-nCoV (Patients 2 through 4 in Figure 1). Of these patients, only Patient 2 had contact with the index patient; the other two patients had contact only with Patient 1. In accordance with the health authorities, all the patients with confirmed 2019-nCoV infection were admitted to a Munich infectious diseases unit for clinical monitoring and isolation. So far, none of the four confirmed patients show signs of severe clinical illness.
