Cup Runneth Over posted:tell us what happened lad short version is someone posted a news article about a ukrainian-canadian group doing something related to holodomor commemoration in Canada (or something like that), and I posted a throwaway comment about how as a historian of Russia I disagreed with some of the wording in the article where the reporter just stated that the holodomor was an intentional genocide by Stalin to kill Ukrainians. then i went to the grocery store, and by the time i got back somebody was calling me an amateur winston churchill historian and accusing me of saying nobody died in the famine, so i had to do a long tryhard post talking about the historiographical debate over intentionality in the famine that nobody except Russianist academics like me cares about, and how really my core issue with the initial news story was that it just picked a side in a complex historical debate and stated it to readers like it was accepted fact anyway this isn't the thread for this, this is the thread for laughing at juan guaido so i think we should move on! that wacky bolsonaro is at it again, what a harmless clown who thankfully has no power to harm anyone quote:In one of his weekly Facebook broadcasts on Thursday, Bolsonaro declared: “Indians are undoubtedly changing … They are increasingly becoming human beings just like us.”

Can someone recommend me a good history of the Cuban Revolution?

After seeing a couple of more recent interviews of Lula, I've got to say, if you want to understand the ideology of the labor aristocracy, he's your guy. He just lays contradiction after contradiction on the table as if it was nothing, because what he's about is negotiating the best possible deal between mutually antagonistic sides. The recent Michael Brooks show interview is a great example. And I mean labor aristocracy in the classical sense, leaders of proletarian organizations who were raised up by workers from their ranks and aren't necessarily any more educated and so on. Not to be confused with the technocrat-type educated middle class who have never had an organic link to regular workers except as like managers, engineers or bureaucrats. Lula has serious empathy and reasons to be proud, but ideologically he's tied himself into an interesting knot. Like even while protesting how he's been treated, he's simultaneously trying to convince the US middle class and bourgeoisie that they are really friends and would only stand to gain from cooperation.

pospysyl posted:Can someone recommend me a good history of the Cuban Revolution? There's an episodic documentary on Netflix about it, beginning with the independence movement from Spain. I don't know enough about it to tell you how accurate it is, but from what little I've seen half of the historians on there are Cubans and the Cuban historians are correctly calling out that US involvement in the war with Spain was just an excuse to take over Cuba after Cubans already did the heavy lifting and dying.

Guaido may be losing but the coup against Venezuela is slowly doing its job Facing economic collapse and painful sanctions, the socialist government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has proposed giving majority shares and control of its oil industry to big international corporations, a move that would forsake decades of state monopoly. Maduro’s representatives have held talks with Russia’s Rosneft PJSC, Repsol SA of Spain and Italy’s Eni SpA. The idea is to allow them to take over government-controlled oil properties and restructure some debt of state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA in exchange for assets, according to people with knowledge of the matter. He has quietly ended currency and import controls, permitting the growth of a limited dollarized market economy. In a separate effort, he has also engaged in secret talks with holders of some $60 billion in bonds, some of them American, offering to pair them up with a foreign drilling company that would be granted the rights to oil fields as a means of their recouping debt, according to people familiar with the matter. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-01-27/venezuela-weighs-privatizing-oil-as-it-faces-economic-freefall

well that isn’t the coup that’s just sanctions which we have been at for a bit

It's all part of the same pressure campaign, as sanctions have ratcheted up as part of the coup, but it was also the coup specifically that stole Venezuela's international assets like Citgo from them and handed everything they could off to Guaido's people, who in addition to keeping it out of the government's hands are currently losing it all through corruption and incompetence.
