the funny thing is the whole delayed reaction to being cut in half with a katana thing all comes from a Kurosawa movie where the blood squibs went off late, and Kurosawa decided it looked cool and kept it.

Also reminded with Ran, which I need to watch; apparently Kurosawa showed the script to a friend who said 'Oh, it's like King Lear!', and Kurosawa wasn't familiar with the play, but then read it and retooled the script to be more similar and threw in some line references. Throne of Blood is an early example of Kurosawa making a samurai take on Macbeth, mixing in some Noh theatre elements. You get some interesting things when people openly combine cross-cultural themes.

It happens in a lot of turn based JRPGs that aren't about big casts of characters like say, Suikoden or Fire Emblem or FF Tactics.
