In Germany, eight people have been tested positive for the virus so far. Seven of them, five Germans and two Chinese nationals, are employees of car part supplier Webasto, headquartered in Stockdorf, Bavaria. The eighth is the child of one of the employees.

All eight patients were in a “stable clinical condition” and had only shown “flu-like symptoms”, said a spokesperson for the Bavarian health ministry.

Four of the infected Webasto employees had taken part in a training workshop that was run by a Chinese employee who had only started to feel ill on her return flight to China, where she was subsequently tested positive for the 2019-nCov virus.

The company’s headquarters in Stockdorf have been disinfected by experts over the weekend and are to remain closed until Tuesday. 140 further employees were tested for the virus, and 80 of them have been ordered to stay indoors and avoid human contact even though their test results had returned negative.

Zheijiang is 2 provinces over from Hubei. Wonder if we'll eventually see repercussions for the Hubei officials, given that from what I can gather they didn't report this to the Chinese government until it was already several weeks undergone.

It's an enormous problem with tracking the spread of the virus, too! The officials let somewhere between 3 and 5-ish generations of the virus spread completely unhibited before saying anything, and China in turn took several weeks to formulate its own response. We have no idea of how many people are in each viral generation, let alone a clear estimated date of origin, two things we should absolutely have by this point given where the virus started. My personal guess is that the virus is far less contagious / deadly on an individual level than we currently believe, but the number of cases is astronomically higher than China claims.

The best part? We'll never really know! They were so late to monitoring, or tracking, or any real kind of response that there's a giant black spot where the essential data goes.

e: Basically, the situation in Wuhan is that people have been walking around inside of a plague boiler for close to 3 months now. Even if the chance of transmission is incredibly low, you're exposed to it so many times a day that the odds are pretty good you've at least had it run through your system by now.

Correct - the 1977 epidemic of Influenza A/USSR/90/77 (H1N1).

It hit children and people under 25 the hardest, which is unusual. The RNA of the virus was identical to an influenza that appeared shortly after WWII. Adults had some immunity to it because they had gotten it 25-30 years before, but kids obviously hadn't been exposed it since they hadn't been born then.

A 30 year old influenza strain can't spontaneously reappear in the wild with no trace of antigenic drift. We've confirmed that it was a lab originated flu, but there's debate over whether it was just a random lab accident or a consequence of vaccine trial gone wrong or some other kind of GoF research (changing a virus's genotype to gain or lose function).

Virology relies on Gain of Function research for some things, but it's a very thorny area because of the risks involved. Vaccine research routinely involves trying to change the a genotype so that it gains a desirable function like increased yield of vaccine strains. GoF research into the SARS coronavirus, for example, was able to show which 2 of 16 mutations allowed the strains circulating in civet cats to hijack a particular cell receptor in humans to infect us.

In 1976, there was a sudden threat of a swine flu outbreak which ultimately never fully realised beyond an initial outbreak in Fort Dix in the US. It was a novel H1N1 strain (H1N1 also caused the Spanish Flu) with odd circumstances because the outbreak was only among soldiers at Fort Dix with no exposure to pigs. Ultimately it didn't spread, but people were panicking that a 1918 type of flu could strike again. Unfortunately the aggressive intervention in the US involved a rushed vaccine which had a higher incidence of complications and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

The outbreak and vaccine issues caused a lot of panic, so it's extremely likely that the USSR was then actively working with the H1N1 strain from the late 40s for GoF in response, rather than it escaping from some random "oops". However, labs in the USSR and northern China where the outbreak originated all denied using it for research, so while we know it was caused by a lab virus, we can't be 100% sure how it escaped.

Thanks for the effort post. That's crazy that something so deadly escaped like that. Does this also mean we can detect bioweapons through genetic analysis by finding thing that dont fit evolutionary? Like in that case an identical virus from the past? Was genetic analysis ever done on the one that hit only the soldiers in America?

This isn't a doomer vs bubbler argument but I find it interesting that given how many generations have probably passed we haven't seen much of an accelerated spread on US soil. Basically everyone in the US came from Wuhan or was loving/hugging someone that came from Wuhan.

Yeah, that's the only conclusion that I can come to. Wuhan's been a hot zone for at least two months with significant travel for most of it. There's several enormous information gaps that could explain it.. if only Hubei had taken things even remotely seriously at the start.

Apparently a cruise ship off Yokohama (near Tokyo) with 3000 people on it has a potential case(s) of the novel Coronavirus.
The cruise is apparently now waiting in the bay of Yokohama for quarantine and further instructions. lol

Mainly killing the elderly with underling conditions, but who knows as "CCP statistics" are worthless.

We'll see in the coming weeks if they've been hiding the true extent when the rest of the world gets infected.

So far seems to mostly kill elderly people and those with underlying conditions, a couple researchers even theorizing that the varying lethality among different groups of the Chinese population (especially higher mortality of men than women) might map onto air quality and smoking. So far evidence seems to suggest that for young healthy non-smokers it's similar to a bad cold or flu that's easily transmissible to other people but not dangerous to the host, but it's still early days and reporting out of China is, shall we say, incomplete. Seems the majority of cases recover fine with a few days' rest at home, but in vulnerable populations it runs the risk of turning bad enough that even intensive hospital care isn't enough to save their lives.

I think this in the cluster that was announced late last week, where they showed the timeline of the different people in parallel to show that it was definitely asymptomatic transmission.

apparently the woman who spread this and was showing ‘no symptoms’ was actually on fever reducing medication. so she was showing symptoms.
