None of the planned fun or loving rock-climbing walls and gorge yourself buffets, but the sounds of the sea, the rocking of the waves, some simple galley meals, and maybe a good bottle of Scotch to pair with a book or two while actually transitioning from one point on the globe to another. I wonder if experiences like that still exist/will exist in the post-Wuhan Renaissance. Edit: I just want the Staten Island ferry, but with staterooms and the trip to last 4 days.

You can 100% book a ride on a commercial ship and do exactly this. Book the right ship (like a french one) and wine is included with the galley meals. It's a little more complicated to make a round trip back to the home port in 1-2 weeks this way though.

That sort of thing definitely doesn't happen on cruise ships, most people want to live like Caligula. Telling a probably mid-60s insanely drunk cruise goer that we would really appreciate it if he stopped trying to drum up interest for an impromptu orgy, especially by asking the fifteen year olds at the pool to come "and bring a friend", is just one of many lovely things I had to do during my time. Yes sir, I know they look nice in their bikinis. No sir, they're still underage even if we're not in a state. No sir, I don't want to do a couple of shots with you.

A floating deli/bar/library sounds pretty good. In fact, take the boat out of it and I'll just get drunk and make a sandwich while reading at home, there's a dang plague out there.

like what? "a hundred people came into X and X hospital today, 50 tested negative and then we ran out of tests, so.... let's call it, maybe, 30 infected?" i don't see how that's any better it's ok to accept uncertainty. certainly there are many more dead and sick than the official numbers, but that's just because of the nature of how they are counted. i do believe the math people when they said a week ago there were high five figured infected and that's also valuable information. i just don't need there to be some great source of truth that is being hidden from us and yes there are additional issues where in China the cause of death for a lot of these probably won't reflect the virus which is annoying but apparently just how things are done there i don't mean to diminish how awful it must be for many people affected by this, which could very well just be the start of a larger global issue (imagine if it was spreading in Bangladesh, India, African slums...). but everyone getting excited about the most extreme stuff getting tossed out online just removes us further from seeing what is actually happening in reality Mozi fucked around with this message at 19:14 on Feb 5, 2020 |

I think everyone agrees that the number are low for a number of reasons, the exact degree is the only question. Here's an interesting thought experiment. If the Chinese government came out and said. "We were wrong, the situation is much more dire than we have been disclosing. The actual figures are much worse by a factor of x." How would your personal situation change? Beyond what you have already done, and standard precautions (like washing hands, covering coughs, etc) - what would you do? Run to the store and stock up on food? Flee to the countryside hoping to avoid all human contact and pray a vaccine is found before you get sick/die? Now imagine everyone in your town or community having the same idea at the same time. What would you want your government to do? How would you feel if you got 'stuck' on the infected side of whatever actions they take? I personally feel like the genie is out of the bottle as far as our ability to contain it and we are all in the 'pray for a vaccine' phase, and governments around the world are having to walk the line of taking measures to mitigate the spread and impact without causing a worldwide panic. Not an enviable position to be in.

I probably wouldn't be boarding a plane to a major west coast city tonight. Golli posted:Here's an interesting thought experiment. If that happened, I think the more interesting question is what would countries do? I mean they would probably immediately stop any air traffic to China (which Germany and France still allow) or maybe even all international air traffic, and more borders would be closed. As for people in other countries, I don't think they would do much different, there are already racist reaction to Asians all over the places at this point, people have started buying masks etc.

Numbers from the same government that when his started rather than taking preventative action and asking for international help, moved to suppress doctors and reporters. China under reporting the numbers has real life consequences for people, especially in China. Getting real information out early is important on every level, from the global research community spending the resources for treatment and vaccines, to international aid for China, screening for those who have spent time in Wuhan, and even just for things like people to be aware that it's important to do things like washing your hands. The Chinese government basically saying "Don't worry, everything is totally fine!" because they are primarily concerned about their economy goes against all that.

Obviously the Chinese government is controlling the test kit supply to suppress the count. As they bring more hospitals online they'll release more test kits proportionally so it looks like they're keeping pace instead of underwater.
