MassRafTer posted:Tank was not a foolish hire for WCW. Don Frye was the obvious guy to bring in from UFC other than Shamrock (he went to NJPW) but Tank had a ton of charisma and fan interest. He was a guy who had a bad rear end aura, and it carried over early on. Even after they hosed him up the idea of Tank vs Goldberg had buzz to it. I didn't watch Tank in UFC, but I did see him in WCW, and it didn't work at all. I'm sure he looked badass in the octagon, but in WCW he looked out of place, his promos didn't work at all, and his fighting style didn't mesh with pro wrestling. His finisher was one punch. I'm sure that one punch from Tank would do a lot more damage than anything else anyone in WCW was doing, but when he did it in WCW it just didn't look all that impressive. I'm not opposed to bringing in a UFC guy with a different style, it can work out really well, but having seen Tank when he came in, he was just not the right guy for that. As always, Russo is partly to blame, but I'm not sure anyone could have gotten Tank over in WCW, even in a limited, specialized role. I don't think he had the right look for that.

Did he get pinned by David Arquette (he was in on it, it's fine!!) before, during, or after the period where they were ostensibly hyping Tank vs Goldberg? He lost to Arquette about a month before the Goldberg match, which annoyed Goldberg but what I think really pissed him off was a week before the match they had Tank lose a handicap match.

He sorta got better, physically. His family finally had enough of his poo poo this past year and finally filed restraining orders against him.

I figured from all the FRAT postings that not everyone on the UG is a big reader, so I'm doing you all a favour. I'm reading it for you and providing a synopsis, chapter by chapter. As astounding as some of this sounds, everything I post is actually in the book. Here it goes: Matt Hughes makes most pro wrestlers look like normal, well-adjusted people.

Someone in the WWE thread mentioned Vince having no business acumen whatsoever, so here’s a question: has Vince done anything that’s considered genuinely smart, innovative, impressive etc when it comes to business decisions, that can’t just be attributed to being morally dubious, or every other promoter being even more incompetent?

In the 80s, focusing on production was a really smart idea, along with going national - you can blame other promoters partially, I guess, but Vince made it work, and other people didn't. EDIT: also, he, along with JCP/WCW I guess, helped make PPV a thing

WWE bungled Ambrose’s heel turn so badly, to the point where people either didn’t care at all about him or just kept cheering him because they like the guy. And so when he went up against a relative nobody in EC3, they cheered Ambrose and so EC3 took the blame for the entire lovely heel turn because god forbid creative ever take a look at themselves

quote:This chapter tells a story about how Tim Sylvia approached Matt like a man, and asked Matt why he had a problem with him when no one else at Miletich does. Matt then goes on to describe the look on Tim's face when Tim who was hoping to bury the hatchet, gets told that he's lazy, not a team player, and Matt didn't like him. Matt takes joy in the fact that he knew exactly how he was treating Tim, and Tim was hoping he'd apologize or something. On the other hand, if he idolizes Matt Hughes, there are probably corpses in his crawlspace.
