48 hours to allow international folks to catch up since the episode drops at different times.

it seems like they're just totally ignoring the idea the federation is post scarcity though. picard shouldn't need to resort to some outlaw type like rios for a ship, even outside of starfleet i've got to think there would be many reputable and free resources he could petition. rios referenced that he charges money which might've just been a joke, but alison pill - forget her character's name - brought up the idea of the trip costing money like it was a common thing in the federation which as far as i remember, it just isn't. so they're just ignoring all that i guess.

I can kinda understand Rios charging Picard money since we’ve seen that kind of thing before on TNG and DS9 if he’s not a Federation citizen anymore and just freelances for whoever. There’s still places outside the Federation that run on currency. I guess you can apply that to Pill’s comment too if she’s also referring just to the act of hiring a freelancer to take you somewhere clandestine beyond the normal reach of a Fed citizen without the aid of Starfleet.

The one that makes no sense to me is Rafi acting like Picard cost her a job and forced her to live in a trailer in the desert. She’s living on earth and a fed citizen, the only way her situation makes sense is if she purposely chose to live that way. And if that’s the case then it’s not entirely Picard’s fault she’s living out there like Randy Quaid. He may have cost her her career but that’s not the kind of thing that should have any bearing on her living situation in the 24th century.

I had my complaints about the first two, but I still genuinely enjoyed watching them.

Like the cube stuff was alright even if everything was just vague menace and lack of any actual details, it was good to see Hugh, but this episode took a nose dive right off the bat.

Oh man!
Raffi the Vape Lord was hysterically bad. The writing, the performance, the editing! It's been a consistent director for all 3 so I don't know where to place the blame here.
Pilot Hard rear end was just about as paint by numbers a character as you can get, right down to the cigar.

Have they had direction from the network to make it as contemporary as possible or are they just this lazy?

If this is the crew we're spending the season with, oh noooooooooooooo.

e: I'm still kind of shocked. I don't know folks, I try. I really do try. I'll air concerns and criticisms and I know I'll doggedly argue a point well past anyone else caring, but dammit I try to be fair and I'll defend things I think a show does well just as vigorously. But that loving sucked. I hope next week can course correct it all.

(Raffi) I don't get the impression she's "poor." She just chose a hermit life after she lost the job she really cared for

(Pilot) His intro was very cliche but I like the actor enough that he will probably grow on me.

The cube stuff still remains the most interesting part of it. I'm curious how much they'll tease it out.

Edit: \/ yeah I'm almost certain the accent is supposed to be a joke.

I'm fine with a slow pace, but they are really starting to push it with me. They need to get to a point soon. I feel like most of the show has been Picard just standing still waiting to get going (both the character and the show).

I agree the "mom" is probably Maddox, and triggered some "go to sleep" protocol. What I don't get is why they were created in pairs, why she's stashed on the cube, why that one Romulan ex-Borg thinks she's the destroyer...alright, I guess there's a lot I don't get.

Romulans hate synthetic life forms, I guess? Has that ever come up before? Has a Romulan ever given Data the stink eye? Or is that new for the show?

New pilot could grow on me, but yeah, so far he's definitely a by-the-numbers character, as someone else put it.

I really hate how they have built in commercial breaks. I mean, you're clearly going to put this on broadcast TV at some point. But do you have to make it so obvious?

I did like name dropping the Q Continuum.

I'm pretty sure that's what Hugh said and if Romulans actually can break the collective by just being assimilated, that's another retcon from Voyager showing ex-Romulan borg - https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Orum

I do like the Rios pilot guy though and his EMH - I guess that clears up that those kind of hologram programs aren't banned.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the first two episodes, but I'm losing my patience at this point. The pacing is really strange; new mysteries are introduced every two minutes, but the actual plot where characters take action is glacial. And I'm not really feeling Raffi, but I can't tell if that's the character or the actor's fault.

The character is an incredibly tired cliche, but the performance was awful. But hey, so was Stewart's in all his scenes. So it's probably writing/direction. Editing too, ep has some clunky bad editing.

I'm willing to forgive Raffi's acting on a second watch because it's obvious she's supposed to be high and drunk as balls and spiraled into addiction as a result of what happened with Picard and he just shows up on her doorstep.

That's a tough ask for an actor.

This release schedule is infuriating. They're doing the "one long bingeable movie broken up into a season of television" style netflix thing, but they're still dragging it out over weekly airings. IT'S NOT A TV SHOW. IT'S NOT ON TV. NOBODY WATCHES TV. STOP IT.

I heard someone describe Picard as "The Expanse porn parody without the porn" and I really can't disagree so far.

You'd really have ignore a lot of what's being said to come to that conclusion, pacing is bad but it really only became objectionable this episode.
I still think this was an overlong pilot episode they padded to 3, the repetition and meaningless filler scenes seem to evidence that.

oh yeah! absolutely - that's actually the part that made me go 'huh?' the most. that comment rafi made about picard living the good life in his big country house, as if there was still some gulf between the rich and the poor. i forgot to mention it but it really stuck out.

as for rios, yeah if he's not a federation citizen then it would make more sense if he runs based on currency, since we've seen that other cultures than the federation still do. it just all seemed very casual, again like the writers either didn't really think about it or are choosing to ignore the established rules of the world.
