There's a lot of work by diverse authors that actually mattered a whole lot but either are sort of artificially forgotten in the push for the defined Canon of classic lit.

I guess when he staged it in the 80s black theater actors could only audition for like 3-4 roles across the entire work of Shakespeare, so it was a big deal.
