Ironflame is cool, he captures that '98-99 era of power metal very well. The first album Lightning Strikes the Crown gives me warm fuzzy nostalgia.

Yes.
While we're on the topic of power metal, I just came across these ladies:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLFelI93VkM

I'm not crazy about the vocals, but otherwise this is pretty good and nicely guitar focused euro-style power, so obviously reminiscent of early Deris-era Helloween, Gamma Ray, et al. Not original at all, but whatever.

EDIT: No, seriously, I'm so glad some people still remember that power metal is meant to have some loving guitarwork

First link isn’t working for me but :aaaaa: that second. That’s what power metal guitar is supposed to be!

I threw on their 2018 album and this is fun as hell and I haven’t been in much of a pm mood lately.

Seriously. Even when they're not playing sick soaring solos, their guitar sound is just the right kind of crisp and crunchy, and they're not relegated to downtuned chugging under an omnipresent keyboard carpet.

Listening to the older album too atm and yeap this is just as good as the new one I listened to this morning.

This is some really good stuff and I totally agree, especially in power metal, I want big riffy guitar work. You don't have to Malmsteen all over the place (though I'm personally all for that), but I want those loving riffs. And now to go back down the Japanese power metal rabbit hole.

Apparently they've got Vreth from Finntroll on vocals nowadays. I remember glacing over a piece of news that they'd kicked out their original vocalist, can't remember if they gave a reason.

I saw ...and Oceans (and Thyrane and Trollheim's Grott) do a sort of reunion show a year ago maybe and Kenny was still fronting them then.

Not sure how this will do with the thread's demographic but I'm jamming this Stribog album right now and I'm really really enjoying it. They are apparently a meloblack band with heavy folk influences but this latest release sounds like the exact opposite, a Slavic folk album with meloblack injected in it. Basically The Witcher's soundtrack with some riffs and vocal duties split between female cleans and male harshes.

Link is a youtube playlist but it's also on Spotify.

Lovebites are a lot of fun, recently went on a bit of a japanese metal phase myself and this was my favourite thing to come out of it, especially if you love some slap bass in your progressive thrash

This is a little bit too slow for my particular taste in slam but these are what I consider the perfect style of death metal vocals.

I miss the ultra guttural sound. Chris Barnes really nailed it on Butchered at Birth imho.

I'd go. They've been a favorite of mine forever. I'm not big on the latest few releases, but I imagine their shows are less wild and more...uh....sublime? Transportive? Hard to catch them on a US tour so I haven't seen them.
