I'm not too fond of the brother-sister Romulans who act evil by almost loving each other. It's a bit over the top. They definitely failed to justify why Raffi was mad at Picard enough to threaten his life, but I do like how the flashback implied Picard was so shocked and perhaps even offended at Starfleet for calling his bluff, that he gave up on the rescue? It's an interesting way to make him flawed, as an old man who overestimated his own importance in the world/universe. I can see people not liking that, but I feel it's a fair bit of storytelling. Not yet a fan of the captain though, Jesus, what a hamhanded bit of exposition packed within minutes. He smokes, drinks, is rude and doesn't care about pain! But he has the soul of a poet~ And we know he's haunted by the death of his commander, because... he... told us. Blech.

see it's weird because for the first two episodes my feelings were kind of neutral with a few negative exceptions mostly because it's so sparse and disjointed as a narrative so far i couldn't really tell what the show was actually trying to do, but now that the shape is starting to take form - a little! still very sparse and disjointed - the weakness of individual components of the show is beginning to distinguish itself. i hate being like this with all the negative opinions, and with anything else i just drop things as soon as i find myself doing that, or at least pay far less attention. i didn't watch discovery s2 because s1 was so bad and i could tell it would never improve to a level i'd find entertaining. i might just drop this even quicker, since a lot of the stuff i'm not liking is the same poo poo as in Discovery, even though the show as a whole is a lot less thump bang action (so far). i mean - rafi sucks, commodore sucks, the evil romulan sex siblings suck, soji is boring, the worldbuilding of star trek is just being treated like poo poo, destroying things which have been long established and only replacing them with lazy modern day analogues. on the other hand, laris is great, agnes is cool and likeable, and it (kind of) has picard in it. i also like the opening theme song and most of the music so far, it's fittingly elegant. i just want star trek to be good. large_gourd fucked around with this message at 11:48 on Feb 7, 2020 |

Though they twist the captain thing by having Picard point out that his ship is spotless and perfectly organised, and it certainly looks the part. Quite a contrast if you look at the original Millennium Falcon's exterior and interior. His EMH being a copy of himself might be a deliberate contrast. (Also, makes me predict that he might get killed off and they keep the EMH with them)

Yeah so far I really like Agnes as the soccer mom audience surrogate (who also happens to be Earth's greatest authority on synths). This series structure is kind of like True Detective, as we get a few more breadcrumbs, a few new characters and plot lines and locations each episode while the story moves along.

Am I bad for not knowing if the commodore above is actually a Vulcan or a Romulan? I never do believe post-scarcity syfy can be a thing, i will never believe a post-money civilization. It just wouldn't work. And starfleet calling Picard's bluff was the best thing of the episode. I've seen it happen so often in real life. It doesn't matter how important people think they are, everyone is replaceable. Even if maybe not 100% replaceable, they'll find a way to go on without you (and might even be relieved you're gone)

The way I've seen is that post-scarcity isn't so much as thing as the specifics and priorities what IS scarce. Not using money per se isn't the same as everything being free.

Everything with Raffi was extremely frustrating. They do the flashback to when Picard’s request to continue the Romulan rescue mission is denied, but how were we supposed to know that she was a former addict that Picard helped? Literally all we know is that she was (I assume) Picard’s assistant, who gets fired when Picard resigns. Then during the next 14 years she just drinks and smokes space weed. That scene where she is just sitting on the ground drinking in the desert while Picard is standing there awkwardly just came off really weird. We just don’t have enough backstory of her character yet. I feel like this stuff got shoved into the Countdown comic that came out and explained how the two Tal Shiar agents ended up working for Picard. I was also thinking that we have somehow had zero mention of Picard’s sister in law who survived the fire at Chateau Picard around Generations. I thought that either she or his dead brother/nephew would be mentioned by now. The episode to me was extremely frustrating. A lot of stuff seems to happen but in the end it’s still mostly setup. Nothing really moves forward with the Borg Cube subplot. Hugh is there and I guess can’t leave? I’m not clear on that. The attack on Picard happens and that was cool but it doesn’t further anything since he was about to leave Earth anyway. I hope this picks up soon because we are 3 episodes in and it feels like the plot hasn’t started moving since Ep 1.

I think one of the most explicit discussions, albeit a short one, of Star Trek economics comes up during the DS9 episode where Rom forms a union. Sisko is telling Quark to settle the labor dispute, or else:quote:"Maybe I don't know much about Ferengi culture, but I do know who holds the lease on your bar." Even in the far flung border worlds of Federation influence, there is no currency based transaction when it comes to property.

But you can't retroactively make boring episodes good by telling us later that actually there were important things happening that we just didn't know about.

Still think Raffi should be Ensign Ro. The show is much better whenever Romulans are on screen, but I can do without them making the two sibling spies creepy evil flirty bad. They can just be ambiguously bad without that. I really like the world building with Romulans too, like the thing about false doors and the sitting behind someone and asking to join the conversation, and the Northern/Southern thing is an elegant way to deal with differing makeup. They're making a mistake leaving Picard's Romulan friends back on France. They're awesome. I hope the programming falters on the EMH/ENHs and we see their "theme" change to default at some point and it's Robert Picardo(s). Space captain seems okay so far. Hugh is great, and I want to see a lot more with him. His whole deal about bringing back and rehabilitating the former Borg is a great story and we should stick with that for more. The whole "these are the only Romulans assimilated" thing is really weird, and has to mean the only ones on this particular cube. What happened to all those Romulan colonies? I know we never definitively found out it was the Borg, but it was heavily, heavily implied. Soji is whatever, don't really care too much, but I hope she does end up being a threat of some type. I really hate Raffi and everything about her. We don't need a "Feds did Mars" character. I don't know how Sunglasses Vulcan made it through editing. I don't understand where this whole "Romulans are the mortal enemies of the Federation, let them die!" thing is coming from. They've been antagonistic, but if these conversations happened 14 years ago, that means we're less than ten years removed from the Dominion War, where we and the Romulans fought alongside each other for at least a couple years. I get the whole "we have to protect ourselves" aspect because of the Mars Attack, but then talk about that, and less about the Romulans being enemies. That was pretty clumsily handled I feel...especially with all that other background info specifically not in the show. Yeah, so far I think it'd work well to have a separate Soji episode and cut out every scene with the spy. They spent so much time setting up "they're in a relationship" that could have been satisfactorily implied with a throwaway line, like how the opening scene with Dahj and her boyfriend conveyed it very quickly
