Haha yeah but actually I’m a former emt who’s been fitted and certified to wear n95 masks, it’s amazing how easy it is to wear them improperly and I can for drat sure say that I’d rather be wearing an n95+ mask than a surgical one if a bug is actually in the air around me

Clean shave, mask snugly fit, move jaw to verify seals remain when yawning, get the bitter smelling testing perfume, see if you smell anything. Most people would be amazed at how much fiddling with the 6 straps it takes to get the mask to fit properly. It's why the positive pressure battery powered ones are so popular for people wearing them literally all day.

Just heard on the radio that scientists now think pangolins could be the reservoir/link between humans and bats for the transmission, as the virus found in bats isn't transmissible to humans, but a variant found in pangolins is closer to to the pandemic version.

Pangolins are endangered and massively hunted in China for food and medicine so it would be quite ironic if this leads to this species salvation

Any poorly worn mask will provide decent protection to others from pathogens contained in fluids flying out of your faceholes even if it provides the wearer little protection from what others send airborne

I started off on team "not that big a deal", but holy poo poo has it looked progressively worse the more we analyze China's timeline. I'm still in the camp that the lethality is far lower due to asymptomatic infections, but delaying declaring an emergency for 6+ weeks just to look better is really something.

lol. loving name a reputable infectious disease surveillance epidemiologist who is saying this. There's concern and good public health practice is to prepare for the worst in situations like this, but I'm skeptical that anyone epidemiologist working in a context outside of mainland China is "very, very worried."

I'm an epidemiologist focusing on HIV and microbiome so I can't claim that I have first hand expertise in the field but I know plenty of people who do including one of my best friends who is heads up the communicable diseases unit at a major local US public health department and they're much more concerned about the flu right now than 2019-nCoV. He and I spoke yesterday and he said he was much more worried about Zika and ebola, but they are preparing resources just in case.

It's beyond reckless for a physician to be saying such things when you have little to no training in population health or disease surveillance (correct me if I'm wrong). Yes there is a severe epidemic in mainland China and yes the Chinese government is not super trustworthy when it comes to reporting, but there's no significant cause for concern outside of China yet. You're right that China has taken some dramatic actions. However, China is also a country that tends to take severe and outsized action beyond what the problem dictates even when that action is a significant violation of their citizens' human rights. So taking their actions as evidence that something bigger is going on is a bit of a reach, I'd argue.

Your fear mongering is not helpful and is in fact arguably unethical.

The person I'm thinking of specifically runs a lab researching SARS and MERS, is a full professor with outrageous funding, and was requested to write the top-line editorial for the preeminent American medical journal giving his insight into this new outbreak. He might actually be the world's foremost authority on coronaviridae pathology in humans. I'm not going to disclose his name or the details of his personal communications but the insight I'm offering to you - take it or leave it - is that he's been markedly more concerned about this epidemic in private - especially about the failure of the initial Chinese response - than the reassuring platitudes you're being fed.

It's not surprising that your friend, the American local public health authority, remains more concerned about seasonal flu, given that at this time literally zero Americans have died from this new outbreak. Whether that remains the case will depend on the degree to which the Chinese quarantine is effective.

I've traveled in China, toured hospitals in China, met with public health officials and physicians in China. It's not fear mongering to say "watch the Chinese response for clearer information about how badly this is going for them." It's not fear mongering to point out that they've essentially shut down the entire Chinese economy. This is a response that is absolutely unprecedented in modern times.

I hope to be wrong, but this one seems pretty catchy, and it doesn't seem to be at all under control.
