I got to watch a libertarian's brain fry when I pointed out that what he was advocating for was anarchy after he said that he just "doesn't want anyone, man or government, to tell me what I can and cannot do."

Ancaps are very common in the US. Also in dystopian fiction.

Freedom and high inequality are in contradiction, so over time I find libertarians considering things either break in favor of Pinochet style authoritarianism (or since they're goofballs, weird monarchist stuff), or drop being a libertarian. Relatedly I dropped my hardcore libertarian former USMC mentor like a bad habit after Charlottesville when he decided the Nazis were the real victims of it. If money should let you do anything, then a lot of violence is necessary to sustain that inequality, because other people are going to want that money too. That's the core contradiction and it's why libertarianism is so often the gateway to the far right. You can't sustain mass inequality without eventually throwing people out of helicopters.

In local news... You know that $500 in medical grade masks my family sent out over a week ago to China? Ya well they have been sitting in San Fran for over a week and the US government (usps) is refusing to send it. Along with a butt ton of other packages. Nothing is going to China right now. We are trying to get them to give us the packages back but I have a feeling it will not happen for months. edit : they are also holding things marked as donations for the outbreak. we only know this because of internal messages in the usps ded fucked around with this message at 22:14 on Feb 7, 2020 |

I have a feeling the USPS isn’t shipping to China because China is preventing foreign aid, including from family and friends, because it disrespects the states ability to control the outbreak

There are multiple bills in Congress right now that aim to turn it into a federal offense, so that the FBI can directly round up persons who are planning domestic terror attacks before they happen, instead of having to find federally prosecutable evidence of planned crimes other than domestic terror, (illegal modification of weapons, assassination plotting, etc.) , but Congress is totally loving broken and those bills are functionally dead in committees because of partisan bullshit. Example of the above, when the FBI arrested the members of The Base, they were arrested on firearms charges (and later conspiracy charges) and only because an FBI agent happened to be at the range and overheard one of the persons that were later arrested firing their rifle, and determined that they had modified it to fire on either burst fire or fully automatic. Currently charging persons with domestic terror attacks is up to the individual states, and there is no overlying legal framework at the federal level to base it off of, so something that is clearly a domestic terror attack may be labelled as workplace violence, or something else entirely. orange juche fucked around with this message at 23:47 on Feb 7, 2020 |

Internet Wizard posted:No they just arrest mentally disabled persons https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a47390/alabama-isis-peyton-pruitt/ I wouldn't want to be the FBI guy bound by the rules there. I'm pretty sure the FBI agent realized that Peyton was mentally disabled, but regardless of bad look or no, they had to arrest him, due to the stuff that he had been allowed to do. We also have the gift while reading the article of "hindsight is 2020". What would have happened if the agent had just let him go? What reasoning would he have been able to state that would satisfy the investigation that was fairly far along by that point? Noone can say because that's not what happened. There were a lot of gently caress ups along the chain before it came to the point where there were FBI interrogations, and no-one raised any concerns to his dad before involving the FBI, which makes it doubly terrible because he got blindsided by the whole thing. How do you craft allowances for mentally disabled individuals who sympathize with international terrorist organizations? That's a thorny patch of legal scholarship that I don't have any expertise in. There's a huge difference between the above, and stopping someone on the street corner because they "look shifty" and you're a bored beat cop looking for some fun. orange juche fucked around with this message at 00:24 on Feb 8, 2020 |

On top of how dumb it is, last I checked guidance this FY is take one APFT for record (tons of people knocked that out early), then switch to diagnostic ACFTs, which are hard as unobtanium to max, but easy as hell for men to pass and don’t count for record til next FY. E: also the ACFT is not age gated, no sir. But they conveninetly lowered standards for higher ranks, which happen to be older people.
