The funniest thing about 3D Zelda being broken is it's literally never twilight princess. Or if it is it's like a triple frame perfect trick that saves 45 seconds.

I appreciate the 3D Zelda community efforts in making 3D Zelda runs more tolerable to watch.

I mean, they're just gonna run the 100% All BS 5h run instead but still.

I'm rewatching the great FF7 GDQ run from a few years ago. I forgot just how good it was!

I totally forgot about Beefaroni and COOL RANCH.

if I could go back in time I wouldn't name Cloud "SpikeVege", I would have donated for "SpikeVGta" so it would fit and be readable. Oh well!

Haven't actually seen gameplay for this yet. Looks neat. Great run!

It really is. I've been re-watching it over the course of the week. I honestly forgot lots of subtle story beats of FF7 and it makes me extra excited for the remake.

I also rewatched the SGDQ 2019 Zelda/Metroid combo randomizer in-between because god drat it Patty has the best commentary. Next I gotta rewatch the GDQx run because of BOOTS.

This is one of those times I wish there was an accompanying commentary track. I know it has to do with the recently-discovered wrong-warp but hell if I know what they're actually doing here to execute it.

Holding an object that isn't loaded makes your held object a point in the memory that doesn't get corrected and from there it's just a matter of doing some compsci magic to feed the game the right 1s and 0s to make it think it's a really good idea to load the credits right now.

This isn't strictly speedrun related but I figured there's enough general interest in SM64 here to be worth it. There's been an ongoing project to decompile and reverse engineer SM64 and the team now has a perfect recreation of the source code*. This has allowed people to fix bugs in the original game and even optimize performance in particularly laggy areas like Dire Dire Docks. This video is a decent overview of one such discovery.

*Recompiling the reverse engineered source code produces a byte for byte exact copy of the original ROM.

I once spent a few days at a previous job looking at decompiled code to figure out how a program worked that was much simpler than a full 3D game, and it was probably the most miserable few days of my life. I can't imagine doing something like that for fun.

Have they been able to do more than mess around with the make file compiler flags? Have they dug down into the actual code and been able to make any sense of it?

Oot Any% is slowly starting to look more and more like some sort of edited game footage released on some obscure forum showing how you can totally beat the game in under ten minutes.

It's incredible how far the game has been pushed. I can't imagine showing what's possible today to runners from even a few years ago and having them believe it.

Helping goons with math
On the decompilation of SM64:

As mentioned in that video, the completion of figuring out what all the functions and such do is relatively recent, and was not needed for most of Pannenkoek's work/all of Kaze's work. Most of what Pannenkoek does is based on STROOP, his way of monitoring and understanding RAM during gameplay, which was comparatively easier to sort out versus figuring out all the functions used to build the ROM.

IIRC, Pannekoek did use partial completion of the decompilation project a year or two ago to build an accurate simulator of the randomness in Tick Tock Clock to determine that a potential A-button challenge strategy which depended on insane luck would not be feasible/or at least would likely require days and days of waiting/manipulation.

Now that the decompilation project is done, I'm not sure what it's been used for aside from examine the compiler flag stuff and confirm that the bulk of the Dire Dire Docks lag is from the sub's collision detection being set up as if it were going to move, making it much more computationally intensive than needed. If there's other stuff being done with it, it hasn't been relevant to Pannenkoek's videos. Maybe the decompilation will be used to search for new ABC stuff or is being used to confirm that the strategy for 0 A presses should work the way people think, but I haven't kept up with the news/discord recently.

Same with Wind Waker. I bet they’ll find a way to complete the run with nothing but the Wind Waker itself soon.

The Saga

Marathons are arriving. ESA Winter starts on Sunday and runs until the 22nd, and literally the next day on the 23rd, Frost Fatales starts and runs until the end of February (in timezones such as mine, it ends in March, even). So I've been toying around with the idea of making one thread to cover both of them, since ESAW threads don't tend to be super active, and I doubt a standalone FF thread would do much better. For reference, the GDQx 2019 thread reached only three pages, it's really only AGDQ and SGDQ threads that get a ton of activity. Opinions on that?

One thread for both works for me and I can keep it stickied and change the title when it becomes the Frost Fatales run.
