Re: phones
The two that get me are:
1) Busy Signals
2) waiting in line

Like, I don’t even mind waiting in line that much anymore... more time to access almost all of the worlds collective knowledge at my fingertips! Wtf did we do in an hour long line before??? Is the lack of all that time alone with our thoughts nowadays gonna change us or the way we think in any way?

Meh, Im an old... it’ll probably make the next gen better than us

When I was a kid I called a friend of mine and I must have gotten his dad high or drunk or something and when he picked up the phone he started screaming about killing me. That was very 80s, when you called somewhere you had no idea who you were going to get.

It put a anxiety in me about cold calling people for years.

I was lucky to have parents that allowed me to watch The Simpsons and also Married With Children. For no reason whatsoever, I started thinking about the episode in which Al got his Ferguson and began chuckling. This barely meets the 1980s cutoff, airing in 1989 (a second episode featuring the Ferguson was Al's revenge on Peg's redecorating and that aired in 1991).

Married with Children rules. I was rewatching it a little bit recently, it really surprised me. As a kid I thought the show was about horrible people who were lovely to each other and everyone else, like Always Sunny...but in literally every situation they always have their family's back, they defend each other no matter what, it's actually incredibly wholesome.

Married With Children was a welcome reaction to the saccharine Cosby Show that was so huge at the time. In that show, Bill was a doctor, his wife was a lawyer, his kids were all wonderful and they lived in a big house and everyone was so nice.

It was a breath of fresh air at the time to see people who were more working class, hated their jobs, and acting selfishly. Roseanne was also a hit as the "anti-Cosby".

a buddy of mine is a bartender in a joint where michael stipe is a regular. stipe isn't a barfly or anything, he's not in there every day or even every week, but he's there often enough to where the staff would know him even if he wasn't a celeb. he's a chill guy who has his bar friends, it's just one of his hangout spots. anyway he mostly likes to keep it very down to earth, everyone just knows him as mike and the whole rock and roll hall of fame thing is just assumed as a given and not discussed. anyone who gets star struck gets shot down, hard, by the staff. he's only mike, leave him alone, he wants to have a couple beers and hang out in peace

We are about a third of the way through re-watching MWC since it’s on Hulu. The thing I really always liked is that while there are for sure some problematic moments/dialogue due to the time it was in, for the most part they are pretty accepting/inclusive, even Al. Amanda Bearse wrote and produced a bunch of the episodes and it made the show greater in that respect than it had any right to be.

Dang, I had a huge post typed up that got eaten that I’m not typing again :(

Summary:
I loved this movie
I was young enough that I tried to float like the beach/sand scene in the movie while running :)
Wilford Brimley’s most badass role

The “Force” in Star Wars really spurred a lot of “Mind over Matter” type stuff in the eighties... does that still exist today? Not superheroes, but normal people doing superhero/magic things through intense study/meditation/training?

It was actually one of my gripes about The Last Jedi and I’m glad they walked it back with Rise of Skywalker

ROBBLE GROBBLE
I loved that movie! (It's extremely problematic!)
I even bought one of the books to have more adventures and fun! (Even in the 80's I realized the books were problematic to an insane degree. They're like Bond books but makes Bond books seem kid friendly in regards to sexism/racism) I don't think I read more than half!

New Order's Blue Monday in a Sunkist commercial.

That's actually Bernard Sumner singing in the commercial. Supposedly being paid £200k to do it, Sumner wrote that amount on a piece of paper and stuck it to the wall of the vocal booth, looking af it while he was recording the mutated vocals.

Also worth noting, for some reason all of the "live performance" footage in the commercial is from a completely unrelated video for Touched by the Hand of God, a send-up of all the clichéd MTV rock videos.
