StormDrain posted:Did Costco or maybe Price Club or even Sams used to do the thing where you just wheeled up the cart and they scanned and put it into a second cart directly? No belt or scale, just cart to cart? Last night I was feeling like the taking my goods out of the cart was a waste of time. Of course it meant they didn't have to lift 80 lbs of kitty litter which may be the deciding factor. Yeah, my Costco used to do the cart to cart thing now that I think about it. It was probably to ensure that everything got scanned. Not sure when they got rid of that system.

Anyone remember this ad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-1F71Wa_zo Basically that amazon store but as envisioned by ibm back in the early noughties. Definitely downsides to that but sometimes I think that’d just be cool how drat convenient it is..

Pump Jockey posted:Costco would be a better place if everyone just put all of their items in their cart barcode-up as they shopped. I always do that and sail through the checkout, earning praise from the cashier who only has to speedily beep-beep-beep through my cart with the handheld beepery thingy. This is a pro-tip. I usually only put soft, non-box items on the conveyor belt. Helps get in and out in 20 minutes, even with a cart load and children with.

I dislike putting any fabric stuff on the conveyor because there is often some mystery liquid drips on there so I always leave clothes or stuffie dolls in the cart basket.

They just expanded the self checkouts at my local Costco from 6 to 9, plus adding 6 more for the food court, so in typical Costco fashion, what they do with self checkout is very much about handling the needs of a given location it seems. I personally really like it as it moves so much faster than what they had before. People with a couple items seem to self select to the self checkout while those with full carts still hit the cashiers.

My wife and I like to pay 50/50 and iirc the self checkout lanes don’t really support that And at mine you have to call an employee over to get a hand scanner for big items. Home Depot just gives you your own hand scanner and it works great. Big fan of the kiosks at the food court though

I did the self checkout this morning, they had an employee guiding people to the registers and using the hand held to get large items before you even start on the small stuff. Worked pretty well, and he had an eye on everybody in case they needed help. Much better set up than grocery stores.

Just took a morning trip with the kids. My soundbar's been acting up (randomly dropping the rear and sub) and the helpful customer service rep was able to call up the transaction, print out a receipt for it, and let me know they just need the unit brought in for an exchange any time I needed. Love the 'Co.

My Costco has the sherpa throws marked down to $9.97 since it's out of season for that stuff. If your local Costco still has them it's a good reason to pick one up.

If you want an even softer bed, add Costco’s fleece sheets to the mix. They’re basically just really thin fleece blankets and it’s just the best. They’re also only around $30 for a queen set, significantly cheaper than the sateen sheets they also carry.

canyoneer posted:One of the Cos near me piloted a self scanner thing for a bit. You get a handheld scanner, and scan your item as you put it into your cart. At the end there's a special register you walk up to, they take your scanner and payment, count your items, and send you on your way. Sam's Club has a thing where you scan and pay with your app. so you scan the barcodes on your phone as you put the stuff in your cart, and then pay through the app. you show your receipt on your phone on the way out. it's loving amazing, honestly. you essentially just put things in your cart and walk out.

Back when I cashiered at BJ's I hated when people did the "all barcodes up" thing trying to help. If it's <10 items it's fine, (and encouraged for heavy items or stuff on the bottom of the cart) but with too many little things it starts to get hard to keep track of what you scanned and what you didn't, which will just end up wasting time I have to double check the work. I can pack a cart faster and better than you, so just let me do it. We averaged over 100 transactions a day, so even new people found their groove pretty quick and you're usually better off not loving with people's grooves. I was also the kind of turbo nerd who memorized UPCs/SKUs for common bottom of the cart stuff and could type the number faster than I could scan it so, maybe I wasn't representative of the average cashier. If you can comfortably grasp the item with one hand and it's not heavy, like laundry detergent, put it on the belt. Many times I have lost track of which of the 20+ items I had already scanned when my attention gets pulled away (item won't scan, tag from clothes are missing, barcodes facing the wrong way.) If it's on the other side of the scanner on the loading area, I can be absolutely sure it's been scanned. But yeah, if it's only like 6 or so items it's fine to leave them in there. If I'm making even just one mistake every few days, I'm not going to be a cashier for very long.
