if we're doing this now I can bring the two Ruth outfield and an above average rotation of some combination of Paige - Phillippe - Price - Christy Mathewson - Smoky Joe Wood - Rick Reuschel so if you have a bullpen and good infield defense we can probably do okay

Thunderbuckets could provide the following for a tag team: Infield of: Olerud, Carew, Cronin, Boggs, with Billy Hamilton DHing (or Dan Brouthers). OF of: Baby Ty Cobb, Billy Hamilton, Jesse Burkett, with Frank Chance as a deceptively good Catcher Rotation of: Pedro Martinez, Maddux, another Pedro Martinez, and some combo of Clemens, Randy Johnson, Jose Fernandez, Don Sutton, or Strasburg Bullpen of: Kimbrel, Gregerson, Hoffman, Soria, Francisco Rodriguez, or some combo of those SPs above if I'm not providing that.

I still need a partner since Pash and Pander are working together. What I can offer: IF AND DH: George Brett, Cal Ripken, Lou Whitaker/Ryne Sandberg platoon, Miguel Cabrera, Barry Bonds. Edgar Martinez and Larry Walker could fit in here somehow too. Jeff Bagwell too if anyone cares. OF and C: Rickey, Griffey, Puckett, Walker, Bonds, Mauer, Pudge. Also have Ichiro and Magglio if you want to get real weird with it. SP: Maddux, Halladay, Saberhagen, Brown, Tewksbury (and Jose DeLeon. Tewksbury and DeLeon are pet projects for me; I think they will do well.) RP: Lee Smith, two Tom Henkes, Bryn Smith, Joe Sambito, one of my SPs. All players are in their prime except: Brett is 24 and sometimes rolls with potential. Bonds is 35 and y’all know Mogul is biased against Bonds anyway. Also I will almost certainly get my 1st round SD pick before the tournament starts.

Date: March 1st, prior to the opening of the 27th Super League Season Place: The Supreme Court Conference Room, Washington, DC : Now that we’ve removed the emergency stay on that little immigration matter- : Bullshiting- : Vile- : Pusillanimous- : Fascist. : - I’m please to announce that we’re moving onto something where we might find more room for agreement. The inaugural RoboUmp preview. It appears that we have granted review of the Vae Victis division. : Oh woe. : Precisely. First up, the catchers. Catcher : It’s pretty clear who’s best here, looking at past seasons. : No poo poo. We can make this unanimous, right? Does anyone NOT think Yogi is the best catcher in the division? Especially in the Genericdome? : I think the only question is whether a Simmons/Hartnett platoon is better than a full time Piazza. : Lets go with the platoon, Piazza was great for the Demon Hunters two seasons back, but awful last year. Rochester Generics - Yogi Berra (24) Oriath Exiles - Ted Simmons (29)/Gabby Hartnett (24) Towa City Demon Hunters - Mike Piazza (25) Titanic Deck Chairs - Gabby Hartnett (24) First Base : These teams seem to really like the same players. : Except for the Generics, who have built a murderer’s row of lefties in a knockoff of the old Leftorium. : Johnny Mize is an MVP candidate for the Generics, and decidedly not so for anyone else. : After that... : It’s simple. Pujols always hits, even in Baby form. Frank Thomas can hit just as well, but isn’t as consistent. Generics - Johnny Mize (25) Deck Chairs - Albert Pujols (27) Exiles - Albert Pujols (23) Demon Hunters - Frank Thomas (24) Second Base : I had to double check, but apparently the Generics are running out Old Hornsby against both lefties and righties. : Hallelujah, the Generics aren’t the best at every position. : Actually, if it wasn’t for Jeff Kent, he’d have the worst at a position. : It’s a good thing we don’t get age-bugged as justices, though, can you imagine? : I beg your pardon, I’ve had the opinions and ideals of a 75 year old man since I was 15. : No poo poo. How do you think you got this job, kid? Exiles - Joe Morgan (33)/Rogers Hornsby (23) Deck Chairs - Nap Lajoie (29) Generics - Rogers Hornsby (35) Demon Hunters - Jeff Kent (28) Shortstop : THE MACHINE! : THE MACHINE! : THE MACHINE! : THE MACHINE! : … : Oh come on, Clarence, don’t be a stick in the mud. : I’m just here so I don’t get fined. Exiles - The MACHINE (AGELESS) Generics - Honus Wagner (23) Deck Chairs - Arky Vaughn (27) Demon Hunters - Alex Rodriguez (34) Third Base : Since there’s no dispute about who’s best in the division, can I just file a dissent regarding Mike Schmidt’s ratings? : I’m not sure it’s a dissent if we all agree with you. : Best 3rd baseman of all time, and he’s barely good enough in Mogul to be a viable platoon option. At least he plays good defense. Exiles - Wade Boggs (34) Generics - Chipper Jones (29) Deck Chairs - Edgar Martinez (28) Demon Hunters - Mike Schmidt (31) Left Field : Another unanimous top ranking. : The Splendid Splinter hitting in that stadium should put up some ridiculous numbers. : I’d only footnote that he actually hasn’t been overwhelmingly good for the Generics until last season. OPS+ of 102, 95, 125, 107, and 118. : C’mon Stevie B, he’s the fuckin’ Kid! The Splendid Splinter! I saw him play when I was at Harvard! He was gently caress old but still the best hitter in baseball! : It’s in a footnote! : The rest… don’t have much separation. : Please publish my dissent about putting Mantle below Robinson. It reads “The best switch hitter with power ever deserves better. The End.” Generics - Ted Williams (33) Demon Hunters - Frank Robinson (30) Deck Chairs - Mickey Mantle (33) Exiles - Goose Goslin (24)/Rickey Henderson (30) Center Field : Prime Cobb is best Cobb. : And Speaker is considered the best Super League CF. : Two unanimous decisions. : Wait, that vintage Speaker hasn’t worked out too well for the Exiles nee Nether Zephyrs. : And Willie Mays will be a better fielder. I think we give the edge to Mays. Divided court, but we have the majority. : Well, at least we all agree that playing Barry Bonds in center will be something to watch. Deck Chairs - Ty Cobb (26) Demon Hunters - Willie Mays (27) Exiles - Tris Speaker (35) Generics - Barry Bonds (30) Right Field : Paul Waner hits for ridiculous average, while Aaron is usually good but not great. : I hope you will all sign onto Part IV of my opinion, stating that we must view Ott’s, and all Generics hitters, performances with the understanding of park effects on their statistics. It would be inappropriate to apply the numbers as they are ingame as if in a vacuum. : Well, obviously context is important beyond just the original rating of the player. : Didn’t we already set a precedent for that with Mize at first base? : Wait- hang on- is Justice Ginsburg saying- : HA! GOTTEM! NO TAKEBACKS! (GINSBURG stands up and trades high fives with SOTOMAYOR, KAGAN, and BREYER) Deck Chairs - Paul Waner (27) Exiles - Hank Aaron (25) Generics - Mel Ott (33) Demon Hunters - Hank Aaron (33) Designated Hitter : There’s three teams who are pretty hard to separate at DH, and then there’s the Exiles. : Unfortunately, the Exiles just can’t keep up here. Foxx, Williams, and Musial could all have MVP worthy seasons. Murray/Ramirez probably won’t even with platoon advantage. : Ted Williams could still hit at 36. : So could Stan the Man. : Double XX is closer to his prime, though, and more likely to make it through a season without spending time on the IL. That’s gotta be worth something. : It’s as fair as anything else we’ve come up with so far. Demon Hunters - Jimmie Foxx (25) Deck Chairs - Ted Williams (36) Generics - Stan Musial (37) Exiles - Eddie Murray (31)/Manny Ramirez (35) Starting Pitcher 1 : Oh god, they all have the same pitchers too. : Talk about a copycat league. : I wish like hell Old Hoss was the best staff ace, but sadly it ain’t so. : He’s probably better than Jim McCormick, though. Generics - Walter Johnson the Elder (32) Exiles - Pete Alexander the Elder (34) Deck Chairs - Old Hoss Radbourne (26) Demon Hunters - Jim McCormick the Elder (28) Starting Pitcher 2 : How many Pete Alexanders are there in this league, anyways? : This really makes me appreciate Fairgame trying to put together an 80s/90s rotation that’s NOT from the 19th century. : There’s no reason for a random 1870s/1880s pitcher to be so good, but such is life in this “Super-League.” Past performance indicates Mathews is almost definitely a better SL pitcher than Jim McCormick, and yet Towa City has one of the Mathews in the bullpen and the Jims McCormicks as his 1 and 3 starters. : If Grove were on any other team in the division I’d move him up above Marichal, but only the Generics have a majority lefty lineup, so he’s going to get dinged by the Aarons and Pujolsi of the division. : Can we start a pool on whether Grover Cleveland Alexander the Eldest age bugs all the other Pitchin’ Petes? : I won’t take that bet, it’s going to happen. Demon Hunters - Bobby Mathews the Elder (29) Exiles - Juan Marichal (33) Generics - Lefty Grove (26) Deck Chairs - Pete Alexander the Eldest (38) Starting Pitcher 3 : Is it late enough in the preview that we can just get the clerks to type up something slightly different from what we’ve agreed to put in under the Staff Ace section? : I mean, we already have them citing everything. : Yeah, the only difference from SP1 is that Addie Joss replaces Old Hoss in third place. Generics - Walter Johnson the Younger (24) Exiles - Pete Alexander the Younger (24) Deck Chairs - Addie Joss (23) Demon Hunters - Jim McCormick the Younger (27) Starting Pitcher 4 : Another Lefty Grove! And this time he’ll face more lefthanders. : Plank has been real good for the Generics over the years. (at the same time) : Lets go with Grove- : Let’s go with Plank- (BREYER and GORSUCH stop short, and look at ROBERTS) : I can only call balls and strikes as I see em, Plank has the better results. : There’s a serious dropoff after those two. Reuschel is 4th or 5th starter material for a Subpar team, and Jim Devlin is an unknown quantity who was not great in the one Super League season he appeared. : At least Reuschel is fairly modern. Generics - Eddie Plank (35) Exiles - Lefty Grove (30) Deck Chairs - Rick Reuschel (23) Demon Hunters - Jim Devlin (26) Starting Pitcher 5 : I’m surprised there aren’t more Mathewson’s out there. But this one is old and has a mixed track record. : Everyone is apparently using their feeder points on 19th century pitching, instead. : I got no clue who to go with here. : Cummings is probably the best bet, but Nolan Ryan would be most interesting. : Yes, let’s go with Ryan. He’ll either prove us right and we’ll look like geniuses, or it’ll be close enough that we can make later distinctions to overrule this sotto voce. Deck Chairs - Nolan Ryan (30) Demon Hunters - Candy Cummings (27) Generics - Christie Mathewson (35) Exiles - Noodles Hahn (24) Bullpen : Last but not least! The bullpens. : Who the heck is Bob Locker? : No clue, but he doesn’t appear to be very good. : Neither does this Gary Lavelle jabroni. : Top to bottom it really seems like the Demon Hunters have the best bullpen. They’re better at the top end than the Generics, even though the Generics have the best depth. : The Generics aren’t far off, but I concur in the judgment and in your reasoning. : I think I have to put the Deck Chairs at the bottom of the pile, the Elusive Closer gives up a lot of taters and other than Kimbrel there’s a lack of steady performers even if they provided good results last season. Demon Hunters - Mariano Rivera (33)/Jonathan Papelbon (29)/Dennis Eckersley (32)/Rod Beck (25)/Bobby Mathews the Younger (23)/Tommy Bond (19) Generics - Trevor Hoffman (35)/Bruce Sutter (25)/Rollie Fingers (23)/Sergio Romo (28)/Joe Nathan (31)/Tim Keefe (25) Exiles - Jonathan Papelbon (27)/Robb Nenn (26)/Hong-Chih Kuo (29)/Pedro Borbon (28)/Dave Smith (35)/Nap Rucker (27) Deck Chairs - The Elusive Closer (Elusive)/Craig Kimbrel (26)/Bob Locker (34)/Mike Adams (30)/Gary Lavelle (34)/Frank Tanana (28) Predicted Standings : Now lets not forget, the AI won’t use The MACHINE, and that’s probably worth a couple wins for the Exiles. Who finishes in second, third, and fourth? : Wow, that’s a tough one. : I like Towa City to hang on. They’ve been around long enough to have some depth to see them through injuries. : The Deck Chairs have a slightly better stastistical profile, though. : And we really don’t know how much better the Exiles will be with The MACHINE instead of Johnny Pesky or Troy Tulowitski at short. : How are we going to come to even a plurality decision? (The door flies open) : What’s up, chucklefucks? : What are you doing here?! You’re supposed to be dead! (RUTH BADER-GINSBURG cackles) : You thought death was the end of the line? SCOTUS is for life- AND undeath. : Here’s how it is, nerds. Generics to win the division, Towa City at 84 wins and second, Oriath in third at 82 wins, and Deck Chairs a shufflin’ in last with 78. So says the honorable JP Stevens. (Several seconds pass in uncomfortable silence) : Someone wake up Justice Thomas, he’s been asleep since we got to the outfielders.

The Invitational, Pool Play : People of the Super-League, attend me carefully! The time has come! Eight teams enter! The winner gains a prize of unfathomable power! The losers must live with the knowledge that their failures has cost them both a draft pick and my esteem! : Are there rules to this thing? : The eight teams have been divided into two pools. After 60 games, the two pool winners shall advance to the finals. The remaining six teams, as stated previously, GET NOTHING! Results: 32-28, T-2nd Place, Pool A : In another pool, perhaps things might have been different. : Wait, there was interpool play? Then why were there pools? : I...uh....IT'S VERY COMPLICATED! Results: 32-28, T-2nd Place, Pool A : Man, that was a close one. : Llama's friend really is a lot better than Llama at this. It's weird. : I can only assume Llama's friend is better than Llama at a lot of things, and should probably remind Llama of that fact at the next available opportunity. Results: 31-29, Pool B Winners : ... : Smasher? : ...I have made a terrible mistake. If the finals go wrong and the Crows win...I have put the entire Super-League in danger! drat my hubris! SL XXVIII Memento Mori Preview: A Scholar, Holding a Fairy Dragon's Skull to the Light, to Remind Himself That All Glory Is Fleeting and Relegation Is Only A Season Away LAST SEASON: Camden learned the above lesson the hard way. Everyone else looked on in envy as they sank beneath the firmament to be dragged into the Sub-Par, freed of the cycle of karma. Hello! The Memento Mori is a division of contrasts. On the one hand, there are teams like the Los Angeles Misanthropes, lead by a former SL winner, and his perpetual rival for the division, the Mr. Burns' Zephyrs. They tend to trade the divisional pennant every other season, a gilded aristocracy that fears little. On the other, are two teams who play the role of sacrificial lambs, wrestling in the mud for the amusement of their betters. Every so often a member of the former group steps into the pit and lashes one of the two teams so that he can hear them squeal like the pigs they are, ere they are sent to the meat grinder of the Sub-Par. So goes the Memento Mori. In the time between the last season and now, the show upon which the team is thematically based ended, the pictured equine rehabilitated. Allegedly. The Los Angeles Misanthropes absolutely ran away with their division last season, won the divisional series, then fell to the future Super-League champs, the now defunct RCMP. On the back of the Masked Shortstop, they take their otherwise largely unremarkable deadball pitching and win games. Will they repeat? Will Chelsea Baker express her anger at the concept of life by constantly exuding its opposite idea, death, in all directions? Will we ever see Three Fennec Foxes suit up to adorably clamber onto second base and pee on a rival baserunner's leg? From the depths of the late 19th century, it's Mr. Burns' Zephyrs! Nominally a better team, they stumbled hard last year, not only missing a shot at the pennant, but falling below .500 and not recording even a winning season. Perhaps it's the Brain & Nerve Tonic, but something as of late has been afflicting them. Nonetheless, they're likely to float above the fray and worry not about relegation. That is for lesser teams. Teams that don't have some of the greatest talent that $5000 of 1890s money can buy! CirclMastr's San San Outlaws pray for death, in the same way that CirclMastr prays for the letter "E" to unleash the full power of his name. They actually have a decent amount of talent, with two Ruths heroically dragging their team to the finish line faster than many would-be survivors in this division, watching with grim satisfaction as yet another team is swallowed by the Sub-Par in their place. One day they'll have a winning season in the Super-League. One day Danaru won't make fun of him. It's good to have goals, that way you can spend decades chasing them and not want for a purpose. From the far reaches of the Sub-Par, it's Guiseppe Volta's Milan Mosquitoes! I...am honestly not sure what happened last season in the Sub-Par. They escaped from a packed division handily. I'm not going to belittle the talent here, because it is a talented team. But I am hesitant to say that this is an environment they can so easily squelch as they did in the Affeldt Division. Meme Frogs no longer dog their steps, but can they escape the casual swishing of a cartoon horse's tail? Who knows. Let's answer this question with the positional rankings! Catchers 1. 1927 Gabby Hartnett / 1996 Mike Piazza (BRN) 2. 1957 Yogi Berra (MIL) 3. 2014 Buster Posey (MIS) 4. 1918 Wally Schang (SAN) This is a not great group! Harnett and Piazza are great hitters in their prime and with any luck the propensity for Piazza to strike out will be tempered by the platoon advantage. Yogi Berra is getting old, but he's still Yogi Berra and that's enough for me. Buster Posey is an excellent contemporary and may well be headed to the Hall in 2030ish or so, but he's modern and he's unlikely to replicate his absolute beastly season in SLXXVII. It's still a sight better than Wally Schang whose credentials as a hitter is suspect at best. He hit a miserly 46 OPS+ which is, sadly, about as good as you can expect. 1. 1925 Lou Gehrig / 1934 Jimmie Foxx (BRN) 2. 1926 Lou Gehrig (SAN) 3. 2009 Albert Pujols (MIL) 4. 1902 Joe Kelley / 2013 Albert Pujols (MIS) By contrast, this is a really good set of first basemen. The platoon that has the greatest first baseman in history with the right handed version of the same is better than greatest by his lonesome. In 2009 Pujols was acclaimed to be the second coming of Jimmie Foxx, until he turned into a pumpkin. But that is in his wintry Angels' future, not in the glorious Cardinals summer of the relative now. Fun fact: Pujols is the career leader in grounding into double plays. Joe Kelley will hit a lot of singles. That's nice and all, but that's not why you have a first baseman, and a 2013 Pujols is on the wrong side of 30. Alas! Second Basemen 1. 1916 Eddie Collins (MIL) 2. 1983 Lou Whitaker (SAN) 3. 1935 Buddy Myer (MIS) 4. 2009 Robinson Cano (BRN) An eclectic bunch, by which I mean it's some good talent and then some bodies. Eddie Collins is one of the greatest hitters ever, and he even played second base in a way that didn't completely embarrass people, so a prime version wins every time. Lou Whitaker doesn't have Collins' credentials, but he had power and a glove and it's a crime he's not in the Hall. Seriously, it should be a crime, 42 USC § 15721(a), which states "a commissioner shall be imprisoned for no less than five (5) years for failure to have Whitaker elected to the Hall." It was in an omnibus budget reconciliation bill. I like Buddy Myer, personally, but he's more of a utility guy than a starter. His glove is like some sort of glue trap emitting rangefactorons, a particle that mediates the fielding force between hand and ball to ensure a play is made. He has great contact at any rate. Robinson Cano's at times horrifying average is not good enough to make for his modest power, at least in the Super-League. When he makes contact, it's good. When it's not, it's dreadful. Third Basemen 1. 1983 George Brett / ???? Kris Bryan (BRN) 2. 1995 Edgar Martinez (SAN) 3. 1973 Darrell Evans / 2007 Scott Rolen (MIS) 4. 1929 Buddy Myer (MIL) So. Third base. A station of tears. The bag of despair. The position of futility. Right. I dunno. In theory, this is a perfectly reasonable setup. George Brett? Kris Bryant? Excellent, except...they're probably not going to be. Ed Mart will be a defensive disaster, but his bat ought be more than enough, world-beating good enough. But it likely won't. Who the gently caress is Darrell Evans? Why is Scotty playing small spoon? Last season though they clobbered the League in their positional counter parts. Also Buddy Myer will be decent. Yeah. Whatever. In three months ask me again and I'll shrug as all my predictions for third base end up being completely off course. I promise nothing. Shortstop 1. Masked Shortstop (BRN) OR Masked Shortstop (MIS) 4. 1992 Cal Ripken (SAN) OR 1933 Joe Cronin (MIL) The players tied for the one spot are officially titled "The Masked Shortstop." As you can plainly see, there are two. It is thus grammatically improper to use the definite article when one cannot make clear that this indeed a unique person to whom the speaker may unambiguously refer. One may be allowed to slip in qualifiers that augment the description, e.g., The Masked Shortstop of the Burns' Zephyrs that would restore the sui generis nature of Masked Shortstops. But Masked Shortstops of either variety will loudly declaim, to the background of a swelling orchestral fanfare, that they belong to no team exclusively and are on the side of all who love justice and value fair-play. They will then fight for the exclusive right to be called The Masked Shortstop, culminating in a desperate hand-to-hand fight on top of a slick cliff edge. As lightning crackles and booms overhead the two will grapple, and at the penultimate game held in the shattered remnants of the Zephyr's stadium their fates will be decided as they fall off that high ledge to the shock of the gathered fans, who may have witnessed the deaths of the last bastion of righteousness in this wicked League. Uh, anyway, they'll be real good players until then. The other two are afterthoughts by comparison. Left Fielders 1. 1918 Babe Ruth (SAN) 2. 1967 Frank Robinson (MIS) 3. 1970 Pete Rose / 1935 Hank Greenberg (BRN) 4. 1916 Shoeless Joe Jackson (MIL) I should not be sullied by having to explain this listing. Ruth is Ruth. Frank Robinson is one of the greatest hitters in the game, a triple crown winner in the second deadball era of the 60's, a remarkable feat given the environment. Pete Rose and Greenberg should be a highly productive platoon. They ought complement each other very well, but, honestly, it seems historically this will underperform. Shoeless Joe will hit a bunch of singles and leg out a bunch of doubles so eh. He probably will in actuality rank higher but this is a tough crowd to stand out in. Center Fielders 1. 1915 Tris Speaker (MIL) 2. 1905 Ty Cobb / 1983 Ricky Henderson (BRN) 3. 1926 Tris Speaker (SAN) 4. 1967 Al Kaline Tris Speaker is great! Tris Speaker is likely plagued! Tris Speaker had such a long career that it might not loving matter! So Tris Speaker of the ripe age of 26 is a god among men and so he takes first place. Babby Ty Cobb is still a great player but he's going to get dinged for trying to bat with a pacifier in his mouth. No, bad Cobb! No sliding into second basemen, cleats first! You go to the dugout and think about what you've done. There he will be baby sat by 37 year old Tris Speaker who will still manage to rack up a mess of doubles and get an OBA of .389. Al Kaline has the glove of a RF with the bat of a Super-League average CF, so...eh? I guess it'll be okay. Right Fielders 1. 1926 Babe Ruth (SAN) 2. 1903 Willie Keeler / 1967 Hank Aaron (MIS) 3. 1958 Hank Aaron (MIL) 4. 1970 Pete Rose / ???? Kris Bryant (BRN) Once again we have Ruth. Ruth is love. Ruth is dingers. Ruth is wins. The Outlaws make up a lot of deficiencies with two prime Ruths. I normally don't like singles-hitting guys in the corner OF spots, but I'll make exceptions for Paul Waner and Willie Keeler, because they get on base, somehow, some way, and that's a valuable thing to have. Power is good, but having people on base to make use of that power is better. Hank Aaron is one of the greats, diminished by the era he's playing in. I have more faith a platoon that aims to temper the weirdness of the 60s environment with respect to hitting than to rely on Mogul not loving over Aaron. (Narrator: Mogul hosed over Aaron.) I honestly do not get kensei's love affair with Pete Rose. Either way, this platoon on paper doesn't really stand to Aaron or Ruth. On the other hand the Zephyrs have a lot of pennants. Designated Hitter 1. 1934 Jimmie Foxx / 2008 Alex Rodriguez (BRN) 2. 1916 Shoeless Joe Jackson / 2013 Albert Pujols (MIS) 3. 1930 Hack Wilson (MIL) 4. 1915 Shoeless Joe Jackson (SAN) This will be the first season where the DH will be instituted universally and boy are these teams not ready for it. Alright, fine, Jimmie Foxx will be okay. I'm not sure I'm sold on older Pujols with Joe Jackson, but it's still better than Hack Wilson who had a few meteoric seasons then faded to mediocre. But they were, admittedly, really good seasons. Joe Jackson is kind of here. And there, and everywhere and I'm kind of sick of seeing him. Bench (N.b. platoon partners batting against LHP are listed here.) 1. Pujols/Myer/Rolen/Banks/Jackson? (MIS) 2. Yount/Greenberg/A-Rod/Rose?/Piazza? (BRN) 3. I-Rod/Walker/Traynor/Sisler/Rose (MIL) 4. Parrish/Combs/Meusel/Hooper/Lazzeri/Banks (SAN) So many platoons. I'm kind of inferring who's on the bench the majority of the time but some rosters like the Misanthropes and the Burns have so many people otherwise cycling through all the positions via platoons that effectively there's no distinction between a starter and a bench player. In the event, the benches where the players start at least part time with creditable starters get the nod. The Mosquitoes can survive with a few bench pieces and in fact are starting a few of those. The Outlaws pray that the bench is not summoned, because a player like Meusel is one of those lottery tickets you try out in the Expansion Cup then send back to the feeder when you get some real players. Starting Pitching 1. Satchel Paige/Clayton Kershaw/Greg Maddux/Addie Joss/Rube Waddell (BRN) Greg 2. Maddux/Eddie Cicotte/Don Drysdale/Ed Walsh/Rick Reuschel (MIL) 3. Pete Alexander/George Bradley/Babe Adams/Fred Goldsmith/Bob Caruthers (MIS) 4. Dizzy Dean/Juan Marichal/Tom Seaver/Bob Gibson/Carl Mays (SAN) I really like the Burns' Zephyrs rotation. I like it a lot, especially when one of the Masked Shortstops is there to buttress the pitching. This will be controversial but I like the Mosquitoes more than the Misanthropes, TMS or no. It feels more consistent overall, whereas you have this dropoff with Adams/Goldsmith/Caruthers for the Misanthropes. I mean, they won last season with a rotation that was substantially similar so I think they'll be fine. Probably. I guess. There are good things to be said about the Outlaws' rotation. Marichal and Gibson are underrated but Dizzy Dean as your ace is questionable in the Super-League. At best it aspires to League average. At worst, it's one or two meltdowns away from digging through to the core of the Earth in a pile of radioactive slag. It's not a great place to be. Bullpens 1. Wagner/Chapman/Doolittle/Gregerson/Bender/Coveleski (MIL) 2. Baker/Jansen/Wainwright/Plesac/Foutz/Young (MIS) 3. Hoffman/Herrera/Reed/Gregerson/Perry/Verlander (SAN) 4. Chapman/Betances/Rodriguez/Holland/Lyle/Donahue (BRN) These are passable. Milan has the advantage of having actual relievers in all the spots, modern players who can strike out. Plus Wagner, who's the left handed closer of God. It's good. The Misanthropes have a much less impressive pen on the balance, but Baker will kill me if I rate this lower than I did. She's probably going to kill me anyway. Like come out of the screen and pull my still-beating heart out of my chest, withdraw her bloodied fist back into the monitor and bite into it like a Red Delicious. So powerful is her hatred that the fourth wall is but a diaphanous trifle, pierced with the slightest of effort. The Outlaws have Hoffman and Herrera and a bunch of people scavenged from a modern feeder, which will have to suffice. The Burns' Zephyrs, having spent most of their feeder points on century old teams, have nothing of value except what was pried loose from the detritus of fourth round picks in prior drafts. It shows. Errata and Conclusion I don't get the impression that these teams are particularly aiming at any specific metagame or gimmick. They do seem to be playing in smaller stadiums and neither eschew power bats nor seek it out over everything else. There's a particularly groundball-heavy rotation, but snagging a Kershaw or what have you is an opportunistic thing that teams here seem to not be adverse to. In the end it's probably another Misanthrope season. I am not sure what may have changed in prior seasons that shifted the dominance from the Burns' Zephyrs to the Misanthropes, but that's something impossible to quantify ahead of time as this is the inscrutable whim of Commissar Smasher, whose will is both ironclad and impossible to know. Anyway, I think this season it'll be a closer fight between the Zephs and the Misanthropes, no running away with the division in July. As between the Outlaws and the Mosquitoes, that's much harder. Both can survive, it'll depend on whether the Ruths are as productive in the past, and whether the Mosquitoes were a fluke in the Sub-Par last season. Either way we're probably going to be surprised.
