Hockey and basketball are the only two teams sports that I'm exposed to in America that actually go at a fast enough pace for me to not be bored. They have the ad break issues but nowhere near as bad.

Basketball is great because a team will be down by twenty and then they'll have a really great run and bring it back and every point they attempt is the one where it could all go back in the other team's favor.

Test matches are good background noise to have going on while you're doing something else, and you get great stuff like the India tour of New Zealand in 2013/14, where New Zealand drew the second test match with India, salvaging something out of match that they had seemingly lost on the back of one of the most stubborn batting performances by the NZ batting order in the second innings. Brendon McCullum's 300 and Watling & Neesham's centuries were utterly absorbing viewing.

Football bores me to tears and being from Pittsburgh it's pretty much omnipresent. I always gravitated towards hockey for whatever reason, it just clicked for me. Although, being in my mid 30's it didn't hurt that I started watching right around the time the Penguins were hitting their stride at the beginning of the 90's and winning back to back cups. My hockey fandom is oddly tied into wrestling as well. I was watching overtime during the '96 finals between Colorado and Florida and happened to switch over to the replay of Nitro which was when Nash made his debut. I was already a fan, but never watched much WCW. It was where Ric Flair and Sting were and where Arn Anderson would pop in to be a bad rear end, but that was the extent of my knowledge. That was basically my introduction to the Monday Night Wars.

T20s are a fine sport, but as an old "get orf my lawn" man, it pains me to call it cricket. It's just a completely different skillset to Tests. And you are right about long, stubborn innings being among the best things about Test Cricket. I loved how on the last Indian tour of Australia, (where they finally won after lord knows how many years), that Pujara would just slowly bat and bat and bat and bat until the bowlers were tired in the evening session and then plunder them. But hey, how good are wrestlers on Social Media?

There's a comedian I really like called Andy Zaltzman (does The Bugle, former comedy partner of John Oliver) who is obsessed with two things: politics and cricket. His reporting on the cricket world cup, and specifically the final, was so filled with pure excitement that it nearly made me give a poo poo about the silly game. The final score in the game was 241 runs each after 50 overs, so it went to a Super Over, where each side scored 15 runs, meaning they were tied again. It was finally decided on the "Boundary count back rule", in other words the number of times the ball was hit to the boundaries by each side. To put this in baseball terms, imagine a world series being decided on the number of home runs one side got. Lamuella fucked around with this message at 10:26 on Feb 10, 2020 |

It was incredible in the sense that it was such an unlikely thing to happen but I was in the foulest mood for like the next 2 days. I couldn't work out why they didn't just do 5 overs each way, highest score wins.

It was a magical game we're unlikely to ever see the likes off again because SO MUCH had to go SO WRONG (or right) for it to happen.

Crapple! posted:As a non-American I find football the easiest to watch. Baseball is just baffling to me. It seems like a sport designed so that nothing fun ever happens. Firstly, the bat is round so almost nobody can hit the loving ball and on the off chance that someone does manage to get one out into the field, all the fielders have giant gloves on so it's pretty much guaranteed anything remotely close to them will be caught easily. Taking the gloves away would improve the sport immensely. As someone who played baseball (badly) in school, the stuff you're talking about is a result of it being played by people who are insanely good at it and it having remained largely the same for a century or more. At this point every major league pitcher can chuck a fastball 85-95mph, or 135-145kph. If they throw much below that a good player with good eyesight can watch the ball as it comes in and nail it reliably unless it comes right in at an awkward spot to reach. When I was playing in school, the pitchers were doing probably 60mph tops, I got on base the majority of the time because even with my terrible eyesight, at that point it's a matter of aiming at the ball rather than predicting where it's going to be from the motion of the pitcher like it is in the major leagues. Being able to catch the ball is really nothing compared to being able to tell where the ball is going to be coming down and getting there immediately. Removing the gloves would lead to a whole lot of broken hands and fingers. The ball has some elasticity, IIRC it's basically string wrapped around a dense rubber core, wrapped in leather, but with the speeds it's going coming off a bat or being passed to teammates it might as well be a rock. Outfielders will throw the ball in drat near a straight line for 100 feet/30 meters, catching that can sting even with a glove. Then there's the elephant in the room of steroids, or just people in general learning that being strong doesn't make you slow. Even back in the '50s and '60s it was believed that people with big muscles couldn't be fast, we know better now. That's led to a lot of what I've been talking about, pitchers that are stronger pitch faster, stronger batters can knock the ball into the outfield better, I watched an old maybe '30s-era world series game and most of the hits only went a little ways into the outfield, there was a lot of bunting, because at that point the goal is put the ball somewhere that will take the fielders a long time to get to it rather than just hit it as hard as you can. Basically the problem with baseball is that, as with a lot of sports, once you get to the top level, nobody makes mistakes and everyone is so good nothing interesting happens. Anyway, I'll have a large baconator combo.
