I had two good things happen this week. First, my ex finally got the rest of her stuff out of my house! It's only been 3 or 4 years (I genuinely don't know how long it's been lol). Time to move my shed workshop into the now cleared spare room!

Even better though, the truck got 14.5 mpg yesterday! I don't know what god I pleased to be blessed with such insanity, but I hope it continues.

Took my 3 boys to Monster Jam last night and we all had a surprisingly? good time. I was skeptical as to how things were going to turn out as my 5 year old turns into a pumpkin in the evenings pretty early, but they all had a blast.

Also finally brought my rottie home (again) from my dad's after his latest bout with $5k animal hospital visits. He's in good spirits and in seemingly good health again. All in all a good weekend.

gently caress the Ford engineer who thought it was a good idea to hide half the battery of the 3rd gen Focus under the windscreen scuttle.

Took me ages to work out how to remove it, since my Focus is a diesel and none of the YouTube videos matched my engine bay. Managed to get the battery out after removing the air box and the crappy plastic casing that covers the battery. Thankfully didn't need to remove the scuttle. It was a whopper of a battery since my Focus is a Turbo Diesel.

The old battery had completely shat the bed. Like a cell had died in it, only had 10v. Then again it was the original battery and all. Thankfully it died at home and I had the tools in hand to do the work.

Sorry about your impending priaprism. My old man and I were discussing it on the drive back to his house - we're both pretty well convinced that "beak" on the nose of that Eagle was probably one of the last purely stylistic touches ever applied to a top-tier racecar. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of newer race cars that look good, but form increasingly followed function, and the nose on the Eagle was purely cosmetic (and loving perfect).

A surprising number of these cars had modern belts in them and have clearly been driven in anger in vintage racing. A few of the cars I'd seen in person before at the IMS museum and those only usually get driven at pace-car speeds anymore.

Question about setting up a driveline.

I have a 64 GMC 4x4 that I'm doing a bit of resto-modding to (I had a thread but it died a few years ago due to lack of updates/time). Project creep also set in in a big way.

Before I make a new thread, I have a question about the driveline.

Reference photo of the underside of the truck - Transmission is on the left, transfer case is in the middle of the shot. The transmission is mounted to a new rear crossmember that I need to weld in.

This is the comically sized custom driveshaft I had made up, as the original transmission is MUCH shorter than the one I'm putting in (NV3500).

Now, here's where I'm stuck and am looking for advice.

The motor (350 smallblock) can run at 0 to 3* slope (towards the back of the truck).

This effectively alters the driveline angle. I've taken measurements at various points, and have found the following:

I know this diagram isn't the best, but with the back of the engine at 1.5* from level, I believe that these operating angles are pretty much optimal. Am I wrong?

I really want to get this angle right, because I don't want to gently caress up the driveline or eat U-joints or anything.

Once I have the crossmember sorted out, I'm going to be welding it in, re-routing the exhausts, redoing the brakes, putting the seats back in and...she should be back on the road.

Dude! Glad to see you back with that thing... Sorry I think I still haven't read your PM from literally years ago. Those do look decent angle wise. You should probably read over the document yourself but I wouldn't worry about running that setup personally. With both angles under 3 degrees your ujoint life should be pretty good too. On Saturday we found this football bowling place, someone just opened up a warehouse and it's basically like bags (AKA Cornhole :v:) in which there are two boards several yards apart with two people standing behind each one, but the boards are flat and have pins set up on them and each team has to huck a football and try to knock all of the other's pins over. Sounds kinda dumb, but surprisingly hard and we blew about 3 hours throwing footballs at bowling pins

Not a whole lot aside from fast food around there. If you don't mind driving a little northwest, Cesar's Tacos is drat good, though not in the best area. The "Bishop Arts" one has the kitchen behind bars + bulletproof glass (and there's a bullet hole in one of the outside windows), #1 is in an old Dairy Queen (outside seating only). That area isn't nearly as bad as it used to be, much of Oak Cliff has been gentrified significantly over the past decade. Both are 24/7 IIRC.

Fuel City also has good tacos, but cash only. You're probably closer to the Mesquite one (the original Dallas one is right by the county jail, not a great area, but they have a pool, fountains, etc at the original). The Dallas one is 24/7, I'm not sure if the Mesquite one serves food 24 hours.

It's over the passenger side axle, but pointing at a 45 degree angle. It's kind of a pain on the Outback wagon with the 2.5, at least on jackstands - I could only turn it maybe 1/16 of a turn at a time with a crowsfoot wrench. The wire end backs up into the front subframe. Just not much room to get my ape hands in there.

I didn't drop the exhaust though, and I didn't use a lift or even have it that high up - it would have been a lot easier with either of those. My exhaust is 100% original, I know everything related to dropping it is seized.

New one installed but not yet plugged in:

e: damnit. one of my headlamps came with a cracked dust cover (on Subarus, this is watertight). The seller sent me another, but I went ahead and ran it for a couple of weeks with the crack. Figured what are the chances of water getting into the headlight through a crack. Put the new dust cover on yesterday, today the passenger headlight is fogged up. :sigh: I guess I'll park it in the garage and leave the cap off, maybe leave the lights on for a bit to heat it up and hopefully evaporate the moisture.

Oh yea gently caress doing it from the bottom, take the airbox off and do it from the top. I was meaning the connectors on the Ford/OB, not the sensor itself. The first time I took the front one out of the exhaust on the 97 it was a nightmare and I had to heat it for 42 minutes and use a box wrench instead of the 02 socket that can spread and strip it

My sunglasses are MIA for a couple of weeks now (and I've been wearing sunglasses for so long that going without is painful; I have a really old pair, but they're beat up and have a 6 year old rx), so I ordered new ones from Zenni. Same place I got my last sunglasses from; went with the same frame style, but different color frame and different color lenses (black frame with flame red mirror finish, instead of blue frames with indiglo blue mirror finish).

True, and I already knew Zenni made everything in China, then ship everything over once or twice a week in bulk to California, then ship from California.

I'm just used to even the cheapest shipping taking ~2 weeks at most. From what I understand, their factory is 400 miles away from Wuhan, where Corona was originally detected, but the Chinese government still ordered a shut down. I do appreciate the abundance of caution, it's just very much a first world problem.

Yea and its waaayyy easier. Once you learn a few tricks these cars are cake. Even the spark plugs everyone says are a pain, take off the intake on that side and the washer bottle (and maybe battery) on the other and theyre no big deal. With the DOHC ones same thing but the trick is to get a socket and extension that are the exact length of the hole and you can get a ratchet between the cam cover and frame easy. The first time I took off the top mount intercooler on a turbo one it took me like an hour and tons of swearing, after that time it takes like 10 minutes.

It probably sounds stupid saying these are tricks and yea I work on Subies a lot but I looked at it from every angle, literally, and there was no way to get that 02 sensor unplugged on the Ranger without

1. snapping the christmas tree stub holding it to the bracket
2. removing the bracket that had bolts that were a fucker to get to between the intake and firewall
3. soak the entire truck in gasoline and send it to car heaven and buy another Ranger with good 02 sensors since Rangers are cool when you dont have to work on it

To take it apart I got a long flathead screwdriver and jammed it into the clip up from the bottom then slung a bungee cord around the wires to yank it out and hope I didnt ruin the wiring so I'd have to remove and replace the sensor. To get it back together used the same screwdriver jammed into the clip so I could line it up then used my 3ft extension to push it back together. It doesnt sound bad but you have to work with each arm on either side of the exhaust pipe without no room or depth perception since you can only get one eyeball on the connector.

The bellhousing bolts took me like 4 hours to get them all. I do work slow and methodically but it was ridiculous, a lot of it was the starter that once I took the oil filter off made it way easier so thats a good trick to know on that one. The nice thing was that the space between the bellhousing and firewall wasnt too bad and I wonder if that part sucks on the 4.0s, I bet it does.
