Lol. Some of y'alls health care (here in the states) is loving garbage. I mean, mine is too, because it's the VA, but at least I don't have to pay for the pleasure of waiting 4-6 weeks for an appointment, 2-6 months for any specialist. Ah, the joys of being injured by the army.

See? Socialized health care in America is just as good as private care. And they have to report all their fuckups because it's a federal public entity. Try getting St. Assholes' of Arimathea or private corporate hospitals to release how many gently caress ups they have on a yearly basis.

Join the army so the VA can kill you. Dead veterans don't need benefits.

Two years ago my GP switched from the standard American model to a VIP service. He cut his patient list down from ~3500 to ~800 and charges $1,600/yr paid quarterly to be a "member". If you can afford it this means you can always get a sameday appointment, he will sit with you for 1.5 hours no problem if needed, can be contacted 24/7 via an app, and has no problem writing you a script at 9pm on a weekend night. Visits are billed normally to insurance if in network.

I was having some health problems and my job pays my insurance so I did it for a while due to my issues. It was everything healthcare should be and it is loving criminal that this isn't just the standard of care for everybody in the richest country in history.

Just gotta pay every doctor 5.12 million dollars a year to be one of their lucky 800 patients. Bing bong so simple.

God drat American health care is depressing to hear about every drat time.

The biggest medical bills I've had all my life is this one time where I didn't go to the dentist for a few years and had to pay 200 for a teeth cleaning and about 7 plastic fillings. If I'd gone with the normal amalgan ones it'd have been free.

Yeah sure it's roughly 15 percent of pre taxed income, but as I understand it many Americans pay that much but still have ridiculous things like copay or arbitrary limits under which they have to pay?

Healthcare is dramatically more expensive in the US than in other countries, regardless of who's paying for it.

A part of this has to do with the costs of educating a doctor to the satisfaction of our regulatory bodies and the schools that they go to.

They spend a LOT of time paying off their debts.

Not anymore, no. People who had flown out of Wuhan early on in the pandemic, including a number of US evacuees on chartered flights, were being monitored for infection. This was one of those people.

Not that I want to derail the thread further on this but I don't understand how american health care doesn't lead to massive revolt and hasn't already. It's absolutely loving bonkers.

Medicaid is even better: appointments same day for free, same level of service if not higher because the doctors who accept Medicaid are good people, free prescriptions, free babies, free physical therapy after car accidents, free physical therapy after years of rsi jobs..the only way Medicaid could be better than it already is, is if everyone was on it.

I get your point and I don't disagree, but it's $1.28 mil a year (1600/yr * 800) and that goes to the practice not directly to the doctor. The numbers work out if you think about the reduction in revenue the practice sees from 3500 patients to 800. The solution, however, isn't to pay every doctor practice 1.2 million, it's to put some actual loving money into education and the medical school/residency pipeline and drastically increase the number of doctors so that the doctor to patient ratio drops enough that all patients can get that level of attention. That is in addition to all the other reforms our healthcare system badly needs.

Americans substutited the lawsuit as an institution for the previous way we settled disagreements: pistols at dawn. Sure, it was more expensive, but you also weren't fishing a lead ball out of someone's chest by noon most of the time.

On the other hand, if they reintroduced cane fights in Congress, CSPAN would be a LOT more entertaining.

sounds like it but people have no loving idea how often doctors are sued. obgyn's are at hair-falling-out levels of stress at all times because of it - they get sued even harder than brain surgeons do.

Combine the facts that "Thirty-two percent of internists have ever been sued, while one-third of family practice physicians have been sued. About half (52 percent) of emergency physicians have been sued, compared with 38 percent of radiologists and 36 percent of anesthesiologists." and "More than 95% of physicians react to being sued by experiencing periods of emotional distress during all or portions of the lengthy process of litigation. ... Feelings of intense anger, frustration, inner tension, and insomnia are frequent throughout this period." Being sued loving sucks and it happens to doctors all. the. time.

Well, are they all frivolous lawsuits or should people assuming a hefty amount of authority over others health and well being just assume responsibility over it?

Healthcare professionals gently caress up all the time too. Surgeons leave tools inside people's guts, dentists ride around on loving hoverboards while doing surgery when they aren't raping unconscious people and so on and so forth.

many are baseless, yes. plaintiffs risk a few thousand dollars to hire a lawyer, but the reward of successfully suing a doctor is potentially massive (six or seven figures). many unethical lawyers specialize in convincing grieving patients to sue their doctors.

"According to the most recent data from the Physician Insurers Association of America, 71 percent of medical malpractice cases were dropped or dismissed in 2004, 22 percent were settled, 6 percent went to trial and were decided in favor of the defense, and 1 percent went to trial and yielded a verdict for the plaintiff.

No one can say for sure how many of the dropped or dismissed cases were meritless, but PIAA president Lawrence E. Smarr surmises that most of the cases that end without a payment to the plaintiff are without foundation. Yet these cases cost an average of $24,970 to open a file, pursue the case, and close it, according to the PIAA. "A large portion of the premium dollar is used to defend these claims," says Smarr."

My father has been hit by a car in December. Almost died. Spent 2 days in ICU. 5 hours of surgery for leg and face reconstruction. 3 weeks in hospital. We just received the bill; 5k€ full, he has to pay 700€ and the mutual benefit insurance pays the rest (and hopefully the guy who hit him/insurances will end up paying the 700€ bill + anything for the invalidity).

We were happily surprised that the doctors who did the surgery requested only about 1000€ each.

So yes, such a system is possible if the political world really wants it.

Oh and he walks again and you can't even tell he was in an accident so the doctors did a pretty good job.
