Len posted:Was it this one? I encountered four of those today, including these two, and it's weird that they're not just knockoffs, they're also simplified versions (heavily in some cases) of the games. Mystery Game, as you can see, has like a couple spaces between each room. The Trivial Pursuit knockoff (Brain Warp) may actually be better, since it appears to have eliminated movement entirely. Climb and Slide (Chutes and Ladders, obvs) looks to be about the same, but with fewer of the titular objects on the board, but I didn't check all that closely.

What's weird is that they're published under the Parker Brothers name, who used to produce Sorry and Clue, but now hasbro, who bought Parker Brothers and Milton Bradley, is using the name to sell knock offs of their own products. I guess if someone is looking to buy a knockoff, they might as well get the profit from both markets?

The victory lap once you get the last pie piece before you head to the center is a burn you can't put cream on.

ToxicSlurpee posted:My guess would be more copyright than anything. I'm no lawyer but I don't think something as generic as Sorry! could be trademarked in a general sense. Sorry! the game is basically just Pachisi which goes back...I think at least a thousand years and comes from India. There's a crap ton of variations of it and since Pachisi is freaking ancient nobody owns the copyright to it. However, you can come up with a variant, give it a specific name and visual style, and copyright that. That's why knockoffs are a thing; you can make something similar but different enough (there's some grey area in copyright law in general) that it can slide by. My guess is that Parker Brothers is just assuming that knockoffs are going to happen no matter what and beating them to the punch. It also looks like the knockoffs are generally more cheaply produced. Instead of pawns there's tokens and the boards look smaller. That's really good insight, thanks, I couldn't figure out why a company would pirate itself but that makes sense!
