Police scanners don’t really do much anymore do they?

I do have one of those multi-band handheld radios. It can do ham frequencies, but the little antenna and 8 watt transmitter have pretty miserable range. Still, it’s better than nothing if you’re in the woods.

Naw, they still work. I think they have private channels or encrypted or something, but there's still general call out channels. There's websites you can listen to live streams of local police and rescue radio...so far it's not super interesting. My grandpa had one he always kept on and it seemed cool.

Depends. Most law enforcement agencies are going over to digital systems, the majority of them P25. Many of the newer scanner can decode P25, and unlike scanners of old, many of them have built in databases and don't require tedious programming anymore. The problem is, many departments have implimented encryption, and scanners cant decrypt that, even if you have the key. Radio reference has probably the best database around and you can look up and see what you could possibly hear in your area.

I work as a telephone system admin for a large municipality and this is about 99% of safety forces radio traffic.

When I work in the 911 call center it's more interesting hearing the operators arguing with some old guy who's trying to rat his neighbor out for having too many political yard signs than police or fire radio traffic.

TETRA over here, which is digital and encrypted and intended to be hard to eavesdrop on. It does also have a messaging system, and I don't know the voice/text ratio in normal use.

My town of 50k people is still using the same old unencrypted police frequencies so I still get use out of my old scanners. I'll also turn on the storm spotter frequencies when there's bad weather, but that's about it.

The most fun thing was in the early-mid 2000's when everyone had cordless phones, I could scan the 900mhz band and usually pick up 1-2 phone calls at any time after 5:00 in my neighborhood. It's actually the reason my parents bought our scanner in the 90s. Nowadays it would feel really creepy doing that, but as a teenager I didn't really care about other people's privacy.

But they can sometimes be useful. A few weeks ago I was able to use one of these to help out a friend. Her kid's school had gone into full active-shooter lockdown mode and the school authorities weren't saying anything about what was going on. Was there an actual shooting happening or what? Nobody knew, and so the parents were all (quite reasonably) freaking out. So I found a stream of the town's police radio and within a few minutes of listening to bored-sounding cops, we'd pieced together the story. It turned out there'd been an attempted carjacking a little ways away, and when the guy had tried to flee on foot, they weren't sure which way he'd gone but it might have been in the general direction of the school, so they panicked and threw the school into lockdown. Word got around pretty quickly (we weren't the only ones to have the police scanner idea) and by the end of it, I'm told there were a lot of parents seriously pissed off that the school had traumatized hundreds of kids over such a hypothetical threat, and then hadn't even told anyone, students or parents, what was up.

Oh hell yes. I first started listening to SomaFM around 2001/2. I had a winamp pluggin I could rip audio from it, before it was easy to find music like that for download. I'd set it up and the next day have 12h of music just waiting for me, it was awesome. Also anyone use this program?

Somehow it's still around, but not sure what the use is anymore. It was the absolute best place for obscure electronic music through the early 2000's. Also met a bunch of early streamer DJ's in Europe that would shout me out on their streams, it goddamn blew my mind that the internet was connecting me with cool randos in this way.

I last used it a few years ago because I’m still a guy that just has a couple hundred GB of music rather than using a more “radio” like service (still using iTunes Match) and there’s still a lot of electronica (especially late 90s and early 2000s) that I can’t find anywhere else.

That guy is what's called a rover. There are ham radio contests (yes, it's a thing) where hams try to make contacts with different countries or different areas. This guy is is all likelihood activating different Maidenhead grid squares for a VHF and up contest (50 mhz and up) contest transmitting in multiple squares, often times in areas where there may not be many hams or many people. During these contests hams get 'points' for making contacts with as many grids and/or other hams, and those that collect the most points often times get plaques or certificates proving you are the most ham.

Data via ham radio is still governed by archaic symbol rate rules. Anything on HF (30 mhz or below) has a maximum rate of 300 baud, VHF (30-300mhz) is 1200 baud, and UHF (300-3000mhz) is 9600 baud. The more data you send, the more bandwith it takes, which is at a premium, especially in the HF bands. Hams have lots of bandwidth in various chunks above UHF, including exclusive portions of 2.4 and 5.8ghz, just below and into the unlicensed wifi bands, which hams have been using for enhanced uses like broadband hamnet and AREDN. Hams have had a class A block of ip addresses since 1981 (44.x.x.x). The group that controls the block sold off a chunk of it to Amazon last year, but they still hold 75% of the block that can be assigned to hams.

:argh: amazon!!

Unless you are in some straight-up podunk-rear end poor area, you need a trunking scanner to listen to cops, which gets pretty expensive pretty quick. However, living in a city of a quarter-mil plus I was still able to get some EMS dispatch, rural and volunteer fire departments, which came in pretty handy during a big snowstorm. For police, your best bet without blowing way too much money is an app or radioreference. Even then half the time it'll be "uh Pitt central, 10-26, have 54 call the station" and fire department pagers.

I miss the days when you could listen to all the cordless phones in the neighborhood.
