It's to symbolize how before Cloud met Aerith he was just like any other cliff. A dead end, no way forward. Aerith and Tifa are his bridges to the future.

I mean I know it probably won't but I'd love to be able to explore a bit more of Midgar, I love how they've fleshed it out to feel a bit more like an actual city in this. Also carbuncle isn't a summon in the original FFVII is he?

Watching a beautiful opening isn't going to change that because it's just pretty graphics. I'll take it as fanservice (it looks really drat pretty) but it won't make me any more or less hyped for the game as it is.
