I do concede that a halberd is more suited for houses than apartments, you're overstating how unwieldy they are. A halberd is only like six feet long. And you aren't going to be swinging it around, just pointing it at the intruder. That's totally manageable in the average American suburban house. And as for your rapier argument, not everyone is a skilled duelist. A rapier might be a better weapon in the hand of someone who knows what they're doing, but we're talking about practical home defense for the average person. The buckler+gladius combo allows you to protect yourself, bash your opponent, and hold your opponent back, all while slashing/stabbing at them.

A thrust with a rapier is easier to accomplish than the same with a halberd, considering all the ease of use and deployment factors. Also if the thrust is all you are interested in, there is no reason to use a halberd over, say, a spear. If you really are hellbent on using a polearm.

We were not talking about the merits of polearms in general, you started it with something that happens inside a house. Swords were always the 1 weapon for indoor fighting because they could be carried on the hip easily and used in close quarters. Polearms were weapons of war, for when you marched in the open and your weapon was handed to you from a wagon before the battle was about to start.
