The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness."

So good.

it's as simple as if they bad mouth Bernie now, they probably don't get the VIP tickets to the Strokes shows or the free drugs from the Bernouts, and being devil's advocate is exhausting in its own way without doing so while having front row seats to possibly the only positive moment in American "left" politics in their lifetimes, so they might as well lean into it. besides if Bernie loses to Bloomberg in the primary or Trump in the general the meltdown will be magnitudes even more spectacular than 2016

it's a real possibility that the jacobinish left gives sanders a criticism-free four years and makes lots of excuses for him, much like liberals did for obama. but i'm mildly hopeful that a lot of this comes from wanting sanders to win, rather than licensing everything he might do if he does win. at this point i think we just have to wait and see

If you've got a platform it makes sense to use it to try get Sanders elected & generally not being overly critical of him. If nothing else but because the symbolism of a social democrat winning a national election in America is a watershed moment that could hopefully be turned into some momentum to get actual socialists elected. I think that withholding criticism of Sanders at this point is understandable, the time to press him from the left is once he's in office. If people with platforms aren't doing that in 18 months then that's some Obama-era bullshit and should be called out as such but the nature of a Presidential election means this just isn't a great time to do it.

if this is the case it would be better to ignore the criticism rather than dunk on it and contribute to an atmosphere where people will be disinclined to make them once your ideal "better time" comes around

It's definitely possible you'll be proven right. I can only relate my own experience as a Brit who supported Jeremy Corbyn despite Corbyn being closer to the centre than I'd have liked. It was patently obvious that even that level of compromise with the left was intolerable for the press & even a lot of Labour MPs so we had to at least try present a united front. Which did get used against us in turn as being a cult & so on but who cares about that poo poo. Obviously it didn't work anyway, and sometimes the refusal to call out poor performances or ideas or whatever would get real loving grating, I don't think it helps to refuse to call out a fuckup. But the broad idea of holding off criticism so you don't do the rights job for them is, I think, understandable. But it absolutely needs to be turned into pushing the candidate from the left if they get into office. Democratic centralism loving sucks whether it's a ML party or a dipshit liberal party getting mad you aren't supporting their lovely politicians 100% even as they work against your interests.
