lol this paper is extremely un-rigorous uh it seems like a bat coronavirus but it's unlikely a bat flew all the way to the seafood market by itself, therefore it's clearly escaped from a lab, sure there are other explanations but we don't feel like talking about those so we'll just say there's no proof yet, just like how there's no proof for our speculation about it escaping from a lab Meanwhile, quote:The identity of the animal source of the coronavirus, named nCoV-2019, has been one of the key questions that researchers have been racing to answer. Coronaviruses are known to circulate in mammals and birds, and scientists have already suggested that nCoV-2019 originally came from bats, a proposal based on the similarity of its genetic sequence to those of other known coronaviruses. But the virus was probably transmitted to humans by another animal. The coronavirus that caused severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, spread from bats to civet cats to humans. The last epidemic coronavirus, SARS 1, was transferred from bats to humans by an intermediate species, and other researchers have found compelling data points suggesting this one did the same, so the "bat habitat is far away" point that they base their entire paper on is completely irrelevant, and the rest is just wild speculation. Even this bit: doesn't necessarily support their point very well because this collection expert is clearly taking precautions like quarantining himself at the slightest hint of contamination. In short, I'd continue to be very skeptical of the escaped lab virus hypothesis. This two-page paper filled with speculation and no actual evidence, that completely ignores competing theories of how the virus might have transferred to humans, is not exactly a smoking gun.

vyelkin posted:A quarantine of this size has never been attempted. Theory and experience based on smaller quarantines says it won't work, but we're in uncharted territory so who knows. If 2 months from now, Japan has more patients than a Chinese provonce, then you can say city wide quarantine work. Of course not every country has the centralized logistic to organize such quarantine.

Thanks God China isn't a democratic society. Imagine having to hold elections with all that poo poo going on. A very prudent decision by Mao.

There was no quarantine on the ship because nobody had any symptoms, and they were all at sea together for an extended period because they couldn't find a port. They ran some tests on some passengers, all of which came back negative. Then the passengers disembarked, probably happy to see land and walk around and get some fresh air and such, and though some scattered around Cambodia, many others got into planes and flew to other places. It's uh... Not ideal.

Well the implication is that that person caught it on the ship. It seems that they only tested 20 sick people on the ship for ncov https://twitter.com/ChristinaKerby/status/1227985218356875264?s=19 They all tested negative so either the tests were faulty, or the people who had it were asymptomatic and thus weren't tested They probably kept the sick people in quarantine, ironically protecting them from the virus!
