Cordyceps is a genus of ascomycete fungi (sac fungi) that includes about 400 species. Most Cordyceps species are endoparasitoids, parasitic mainly on insects and other arthropods (they are thus entomopathogenic fungi); a few are parasitic on other fungi.

Cordyceps are used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine, though there have been no well controlled randomized clinical trials in humans to date.

Now, it's by no means clear that they have the coronavirus, but it is clear that healthcare authorities in the US are not really paying attention. All I know is I cancelled the planned visit for next weekend.

If they don't have one already, you might want to consider sending them a fingertip pulse oximeter so they can check their SP02 values. (There's a bunch of offerings on Amazon that are around the $20 mark.)

It clips around the end of your finger and senses oxygen in the blood. It doesn’t actually draw blood. Readings only take a few seconds.

That won't be much good when their doors are welded shut. Get them a few weeks of dehydrated food, and a fire axe so they can get out through the roof if the quarantine reaches the attic

Considering how damaging this is turning out to be to China's manufacturing and economy I wonder how long it'll be until someone tries to weaponize it with a bunch of asymptomatic carriers being sent to another country. :tinfoil:

There's a reason everyone except USSR stopped any serious bioweapon research in the late 60s. It's incredibly difficult to make controlled strains that won't gently caress you up as well, and chemical weapons are in general much much easier to use and just as effective on a tactical level. That said, the Soviets did come up with some pretty neat poo poo, but it took them literally decades of massive resources dumped into research.

They whip up a new flu vaccine every year that protects you against the most common strains that are circulating. It's really loving clever stuff.

I got my flu shot early last year. Next shot would be April, HR organises them for free.

The shot lasts only so long, ~6months, and the continuing expansion of the flu season means we will either need 2 shots (pointless) or need better shots, which is kind of impossible in the timeframe.

This graph is ONLY people self reporting (going to a Dr sick) and being diagnosed. 2019 is the green line. The fact so many are so early and so often is important, more important than the 2017 spike.

From what I've read it's a bit less precise than that, the stuff takes some time in advance to prepare so they have to make some guesses about what strains might be active. Also they naturally aim for types that are more severe to put in the vaccine. So some years it's like the vaccine is totally ineffective against the flu that everyone gets but it's a very mild flu so it's a win anyways.
