Aside from the art stuff Banner of the Maid(en? I"m guessing it was supposed to be this, the translation is bit spotty) is a pretty solid game as far as I can tell 20 or so chapters in, mainly my issues are:

1. Same-turn reinforcements are pretty aids, I know they give you the little footprints icons to say hey poo poo is coming from here at some point, but it's still pretty annoying.
2. A lot of the maps require you to move pretty fast, which means Artillery as a class is fairly limited, although it is very good when you do actually get good opportunities to use it.
3. Some secrets are tied to some terribly obscure stuff that maybe I'm too small-brained to find but seems like some gamefaqs completionist guide needed thing.
4. Chasseurs/Skirmishers seem to be a lot better than the other classes, some get innate range 1 boost (huge) and also their weakness isn't as bad as their other classes because they're fast enough to not get doubled by their counter, as well it feeling like there aren't they many enemy light cavalry compared to other classes.
5. There are too many escort missions. I know there's not that many but the friendly AI is pants on head idiotic and they always start at a disadvantage so babysitting them is the worst.

I figured it might be an allusion to Joan of Arc, since she was known as the Maid of Orleans. Not quite the right era for her, but the game seems to play fast and loose with history anyway.

"Maid" and "Maiden" can sometimes be interchangeable in old timey speak. Or at least old timey speak they use in movies and TV.

I'm suppose to go to this shrine to collect a corpse part.

However, it doesn't open for me. Just says that the shrine is locked.

EDIT - Never mind. Turns out that I had to go to a VERY out of the way room again after rescuing a party member. The game gives zero hints of this.

It is. In the game several female characters are "maids", which are explained to be women with some kind of super ability. Joan of Arc was one, you play as one, and others pop up in the story

speaking of valkyria there needs to be more SRPGs where you can actually aim or at least actively control the characters. i keep calling them 'active srpgs' because i don't know what else to call them. there's... valkyria, arc the lad twilight of the spirits, bof: dragon quarter, the neps. i guess the neps aren't very strategic lol but you know what i mean

being able to directly control the characters and move them around on the field rules

It's not the greatest game, but I got some millage out of Codename S.T.E.A.M. on 3ds. It has the gameplay systems you are talking about as well as characters drawn from American Folklore and Fantasy in a Steampunk setting.

i got about a third of the way into codename steam before losing interest and then i think i lost the cartridge

the aesthetic of it was fine but the overwatch in it was a pain in the rear end

obviously the wait times were really bad on enemy rounds but it got better after patching, so i wasn't too bothered by that. but i was bothered by the actual mission design

I have to say, regardless of where you stand on Banner of the Maid's art direction, I'm not sure what the economics is of a $17 base game that charges $5 for a DLC containing one character and two missions (one of which isn't released yet?).

The localization team for Persona 5: Royal is mitigating the homophobia in the game.

quote:

From speaking with senior project manager Yu Namba, who has played a major part of the series localization dating back to Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (2000), there'll be some changes to existing lines of dialogue in P5R. Specifically, we talked about the gay couple that would harrass Ryuji at certain points of the original game--they were "portrayed [as] more like predatory," as Namba put it. When I asked him about those scenes, Namba stated, "I think the community had a very strong response to that, and you saw that, and that was definitely altered for Royal."

As for how those characters and lines have changed, Namba simply said, "We made it [as if they're] being very strong enthusiasts for something they like doing. But it's not like they're on the hunt for some young boys or anything." It's clear that, like the fan base, those who worked on Persona 5's localization felt some type of way about it, too. Namba told me, "Our team members felt a little bit of awkwardness about when working on it," with regards to those moments in the original release. He also said it was no easy task to get the green light to make changes. He concluded, "We're pretty happy with what it is. It's not a significant change, but I think there's enough of a change that people who weren't comfortable going through that part in Persona 5 would feel better this time around."

I dunno, maybe I'm just being overly optimistic, but if they had to get the 'green light' to make the changes, then maybe there's the chance that devs will reflect on the issue, and be better about it in future games.

katsura hashino, man who said catherine: full body is the game he wanted to make but couldn't because of "cultural sensitivities of the time", isn't going to suddenly stop having weird ideas about lgbt people because some localization staff at atlus us got the green light from corporate higher-ups to make small tweaks to some scenes in persona 5 two years later in a rerelease

reminder that still the only version of catherine, including full body, that doesn't deadname erica, is a pc port commissioned by sega. which came out before full body.

if you want an actual example of devs kind of growing, look at yakuza, where they actually did just, outright remove homophobic and transphobic scenes, in both japan and the us, because they realized those scenes sucked

i don't think it did, but i dunno if i heard about the credits after it got released in the us

but. that still means, that after a version came out that didn't deadname her with the pc port, they kept it in anyway, because hashino did not reconsider anything, because. why would he. small text changes in an english localization aren't going to matter to a guy who's allowed to do basically whatever he wants because he directs atlus' most successful games

Ornamented Death
Jan 25, 2006

Pew pew!

A quick Google search seems to indicate the dead naming was removed from the US release of Full Body.

You ultimate point about the developer still stands, but at least Atlus US is trying in what limited ways they can.

Sadly yes :sigh:. Honestly I'd love to see it get rebuilt rather than straight remade (though that'd be more than fine too), because while the story's fantastic the combat could use some improvements and actual depth.
