Automatable tests are basically a minimum requirement. The same sometimes happens with SQL, where a lot of people are smart enough to write a thousand lines of SQL, but then nobody tells them they need to somehow verify those thousand lines of stuff do the correct thing and won't break unknowably at a random time(And sure, if you're not a programmer and your work is not, hm, "large" so to speak, if you don't mind doing everything manually every day, then sure, go ahead and don't do any automated testing. I mean noone does that anyway) edit: oh poo poo. The 79th Burning Circle of Microsoft and Sulphur is reserved for those who write noticeable amounts of code with no tests
