2 has a way better story. Anyone who thinks otherwise hasn't played them recently

2’s story doesn’t make any sense because the main antagonist of 2 being completely absent from one makes basically all of the lore of 2 nonsensical. How could this woman have created such an enduring cult of personality and power without Ryan or Fontaine even mentioning her in the first game? I don’t feel like they had enough story for a full sequel.

The people that skip story in videogames probably are not interested in stories in videogames

My best online experiences in the last decade is playing online with goons. In one hand chill out nights playing co-op stuff rambling about whatever for hours and at the other goonstacking in CoD4, MW2 and Blops 1 making entire teams ragequit while screaming, making a kid put his Xbox360 horizontal when launching the game (you know, THAT actually scratched DVDs completely) or battlefield goonstacks on PC (BF BC2, BF3, BF4 and BF1) making entire servers go empty. We even had few "big" youtubers go mad and that's always a funny thing.

They don't deadname their trans character anymore in the credits. That's the only change they made to the original content that I am aware of.

I tried playing this game. But wow...the actual game part is terrible. Even on easy mode it was bad.

I like walking sims as a concept, loved Gone Home, Edith Finch, Firewatch, SOMA if it counts, but holy poo poo I couldn’t get through Dear Esther because I was so, so bored. I think I managed 20 minutes after which I’ve uninstalled it.

The "game" part of Catherine absolutely isn't for everyone but I honestly love it. There's a reason there is (or was, dunno about recently) a competitive scene.

Yeah it’s a real hit or miss genre. The three you mentioned are great (well, firewatch is decent) and there’s some other good ones. Gone Home and Tacoma are both decent enough, most of the Bloober team stuff like Observer and Layers of fear are good, and I even enjoy poo poo like Outlast. Oh and Amnesia.

But there are a few like Ethan Carter Dear Esther and EGTTR that feel really up their own rear end and boring and make people poo poo on the genre in general.

I still really want to try Observation but I’m waiting for a sale. That one looks cool.

If you haven’t played it try Unfinished Swan as well.

This thread is more like playing video games with my friends while talking about poo poo instead of being a normal internet crazy house.

I feel like Dear Esther's shortcomings as a Video Game are forgivable because of its age, the original sourcemod was released in 2008 ie. five years before Gone Home, and even the standalone commercial release predates GH by 1,5 years

It's basically the first game fully recognizable as what is now called a walking simulator, I liked it at the time but there's zero reason to go back to it now

When I rented that game once, my PS2's audio cable just decided not to work properly when I booted it up and for my entire first sitting with it I thought it was a bold and interesting decision to have a soundless adventure game in the vacuum of space. Then the next day my PS2 got a fuzzy picture and I realized the cables were not fully inserted so I fixed that was disappointed to learn it had audio.

That’s Edith Finch. Dear Esther is the one where you walk around an island while a narrator says things. Dear Esteban is the only thing of value to come of it.

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture would have a much more positive reception overall if not for the lack of a proper sprint imo. The story is good enough overall, voice work is great, graphics are excellent.....but that move speed is a killer.

It's got a run button, R2 iirc, but you have to build up momentum and even then it's just about the speed of a proper game's walk.
