A very intelligent German friend of mine with perfect English and (apparently thanks to Germany) a fairly significant amount of experience with Kafkaesque bureaucracy spent months bashing her head against the process before finally getting approval. If she struggled I don't even want to think how hard it must be for others.

It's not about scaring people into compliance. It's about scaring people into not even trying to comply, because complying still won't protect you.

The cause being different while having the same effect doesn’t make it any better.

Anyone at all who says something like "surely the EU national currently settled are ok" or something along those lines should go and look up the word windrush and the associated scandal because the UK home office merrily deported UK citizens for being black and did so while it was deemed illegal to do so.

EU nationals will most assuredly be on some list of people they are trying to remove and they do not care about legalities.

Forgive me comrades, but I really need to vent about something here.

I have to take quite a few medications to manage my mental health. One of these is buproprion- this was prescribed by my private consultant psychiatrist but cost something in the region of £130 a month, way more than I can afford. So last summer I went to my gp practice with a copy of the prescription. They prescribed it to me under the nhs, all seemed good.

A week ago I tried to get a new prescription issued as I was nearly out of pills. Only to be told via text by a doctor who I’d never spoken to before that they would not be issuing it anymore for reasons that basically amounted to ‘computer says no’. Cue a week of absolute panic- this is one of the few meds that seems to have any positive effect on my depression and stops me being completely incapable of anything. I’ve had to reduce my dose to half what it should be to ration my pills as long as possible, and I’ve been genuinely terrified. I found this out as I was heading back from shipping out my most recent fudge orders (during which journey I also saw a guy jump/get pushed from a sixth floor window and land about ten feet from me, which has also somewhat hosed poo poo up in my head), and I highly doubt I’d have been able to meet my commitments should the timing have been different. This is also one of the reasons why I’ve not been opening for sales in the past week- I’d hate to take stuff on and then fail to deliver.

So a week spent in the absolute doldrums, terrified and already not taking the doses prescribed. Today I finally managed to pluck up the strength to call the surgery to make a complaint- only to find out that apparently they’d decided to issue the repeat prescription on an ongoing basis and all I need to do is drop in and pick it up. There was no contact made, no effort to let me know about this. And while I’m obviously hugely relieved I am if anything angrier- I’ve been left in a completely poo poo state for literally no reason whatsoever, without any explanation or communication.

Anyway, here’s hoping poo poo can improve now, but holy hell am I just so angry. It’s not just cost me damage to my mental health, but has also done me financial damage as well. And all for absolutely no reason or point.

Anyway I’m going to go now and buy ingredients for a whole shitload of fudge. Hopefully that will make me feel better.

Pretty much my reaction. The guy didn’t make it- I was driving and stopped at a traffic light, on the way back he was still there covered with a red blanket, with just this pair of unmoving bare feet sticking out from under.

Apparently someone has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Tbh it didn’t really process in my mind what I’d seen until I was in the post office ten minutes later. Aged 38, first time I’ve seen a fresh dead body. :/

FWIW the Australian system is loving dumb for some jobs too. Both them and NZ have near enough the same. We went to an Aus/Can/NZ immigration fair in Birmingham and NZ were like "We're absolutely crying out for building trades: Carpenters, Plumbers, Joiners, Plasterers, etc." and then it turns out that unless you have the equivalent of degree-level qualification you can't get the points to get in. None of those people typically have degrees.

Or you might *just* be able to scrape it if you're under 39 and have 8 years relevant job experience in the last 10, or something, but I'm sure when we were looking they didn't want me.

Oh the Australian system is also dumb as all hell i'm not defending it, just the amounts of nuance compared to this insanely simplistic approach. Slightly surprised by your experience with NZ though, since 2011 there have been special visa classes for essentially the building trades which dont require degrees.

TBH I can't remember the exact specifics, I just know it wasn't as easy as all that if you were on their list for skilled trades or whatever and didn't have formal qualifications for it (which many don't).

That's a skilled migrant visa, basically you can live and work there and don't need an existing job offer to do so. You can just apply for jobs in those fields you mentioned in NZ and get in on a essential skills visa if they offer it to you.

I've endured the lack of clarity myself and its frustrating. But it's also not the UK, so that's a bonus.

Which they will try, of course, but it remains to be seen if they can do it well enough, and I am also not sure if he is committed enough to not backtrack if it starts to look difficult. Cummings to the contrary is apparently a Very Rational Skeptic who has been handed half control over the country, and faces similar problems of not actually understanding how anything works but is a slightly different flavour of nasty.

You could be looking at a very stupid premiership that pisses away its welcome very quickly.

I think what Cummings is trying to do on his personal crusade is to brute force a change in UK elite culture to stop systematically privileging arts/humanities people over STEM types (We can assume for these purposes that Tories don’t think anyone outside the elite is a person). We are way, way worse in this respect than the US, China and India, all of whose elites have a much better baseline understanding of maths, science and the use of data.

Not an awful idea if it was done by someone genuinely interested in following where the data leads (ie to socialism). Done by these guys, it’s telling that p much the first thing they did was hire a eugenicist to try to prove their creepy racial theories.

Also there is no way this succeeds because part of the reason for the Tory party to exist is to prevent this kind of systemic change to who can get into the elite.

Ha yes. One of the greatest foreign language moments of my life was in Norway. First time I went, as soon as I started speaking Norwegian they would turn round and speak to me in English. The second time I went, after a couple of years of evening classes, they would look at me oddly and say "Er du Dansk?" even the hotel I stayed at put the hotel info on the tv into Danish.

My Norwegian friend called the hotel and told them I was English. He said to me: 'shows how poo poo your pronunciation is' and I said 'you cannot believe how wonderful it is to try a foreign language out in real life and not be instantly taken for English'. Subsequently I went to Brussels shortly after Sweden joined the EU and spent a whole day trying not to speak English. I found the Flemish easier than the French, and shopkeepers assumed I was Swedish and would say "var so god" when I bought my kase brodje or whatever it was (can't remember now!)
Also when I worked in Germany for a short while, Germans would ask if I was Dutch.
Egyptians assumed I was German which led to hilarious conversations when I was doing my best arabic and they were answering in German.
Have you had that experience where once you get going in the foreign language (albeit crappily) you can't stop?

I mean yeah, different set of problems, but what you want is a balance and if you’re starting from a humanities focus you kind of need to move in the other direction to achieve that. There’s just so much maths and stats in almost every modern job, increasingly so as you get more senior and need to make decisions based on understanding what some set of numbers is actually telling you (up to a point, after which you of course need empathy and judgement as well).
