HD DAD posted:As someone who works in video production, that is absolutely mind boggling. XIII had what, maybe 45 minutes tops of pre-rendered FMVs? I could render that out to 1080p with no noticeable drop in quality, and it would probably hover around 6-7 GB. How in the flying gently caress did they end up with 60GB of video? Do they not have compression algorithms? A large part of XIII's cutscenes were prerendered, not just the FMVs. Their engine couldn't handle more than one high LOD character on screen.

RPGs can have a lot of cutscenes pre-rendered using the in game engine that become a lot more obvious in later ports that can run the rest of the game at much higher resolutions and then the game suddenly shifts to a lower one for the cutscene.

Ryoga posted:This is much more obvious on the xbox one version of FF13 games which has x enhancements to run the engine in 4k, but the prerenders are not. To be fair, the alternative is to go the way of FF15 and include a crazy huge "texture pack" that is like 14GB of textures and the rest is 4k video at 30 FPS. Even if they did generate new cutscenes, it would still be obvious when the frame rate drops from 60+ FPS to 30 FPS during video playback. Plus video compression.

I hope the go the way they went with original FF7. you know. some cutscenes consisted of video with polygon objects overlaying them, other cutscenes were FMV with low-poly-characters, and yet other cutscenes included high-poly-characters in their FMV.
