One could argue that, despite their different outwards political philosophy, at their cores the governments of the PRC, the Koreas, and Japan are still heavily influenced by Confucian ideals. Which is terrible for disaster response because a government designed around order and hierarchy is NOT able to respond quickly and creatively to fast-changing situations.

I have a definite suspicion this is not Coronavirus.

Pnuemonia is still a very common thing as is ARDS. I just had it last week. Nearly died.

There's a lot of breathing viruses and diseases that can kill people.

Oh they were fast as lightning to call (and intimidate) the infectious-disease specialist doctor who posted the video of the horrific quarantine situation. The video was removed from Youtube without further comment and wanted to apologize for "all that got involved".

I argue that the Japanese response is rooted in samurai Bushido; they have chosen to face Corona-sama honorably on the battlefield rather than cower behind medical science and effective protocol. Those who die do so with honor.

I know you're joshing, but not much honor in this. From the NYT (so take with a grain of salt). So basically they are not going after the virus, but the ones that say the truth about it also people who expose their total mishandling of a situation that is now spinning rapidly out of control.

NYT Article posted:

Early Thursday morning in Japan, Dr. Iwata removed his video, with little explanation. “I removed my YouTube clip myself since there is no need for further discussing this,” he said on Twitter. “Thank you and I apologize to those who got involved in.”

Other infectious disease experts said they were distressed by Dr. Iwata’s description of the conditions on board.

“Hearing his account was pretty harrowing, actually,” said Dr. Benjamin Cowie of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne, Australia.

NYT Article posted:

A mother of a customer service agent on the Diamond Princess has been exchanging text messages with her daughter, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of losing her job. In the texts, the crew member, who had watched Dr. Iwata on YouTube, said he had accurately captured the conditions on board.

I can't believe the whole world spent weeks making GBS threads on China for their response, both the initial cover-up and then the authoritarian state in full swing, and then the Japanese government just goes all in with both fists and fucks this thing so badly.

The west isn't wearing any badge of honor here either. From what I read both Germany and at least the Netherlands have also done dumb-dumb poo poo. Including Germany doing a Japan and letting one dude from the Wuhan quarantine evacuation go untested because he said "no". America, you have that Florida "it's a secret" idiocy, which is alarming to put it mildly.

This doesn't detract from the point that Japan is showing the worst ham fisted response I've seen to this yet. All the while engaging in basically an already massive cover-up, complete with mafia tactics of calling up people who blow the whistle so they have to fear for their livelihood. (Let's see if the poor doc who blew the whistle on this still has a teaching job when the month is out.)

I explained how this will work earlier in the thread.

quote:

This is being run by old dudes with no expertise in anything except being a lifetime bureaucrat, who will not listen to experts if anything they say is slightly inconvenient, and who will resign into a comfortable retirement/do nothing private job if anything goes bad and someone has to go on TV and do a deep bow in apology.

Also, the guys who got assigned to this poo poo detail with a high possibility of negative outcome are probably losers that the higher ups hate and put in charge of the quarantine as punishment.

Yeah that made me LMAO yesterday. But now I'm feeling a bit more pissed because they are actually going after the doctor and the crew who are basically saying "Yes that is true. The situation on the ship was an unmitigated disaster." This being Japan I fully expect them to lose their employment and will likely have to walk back their comments in public no matter how truthful. I've seen this play out before.

Basically if you are seen as "having brought shame on Japan" you are *done*.

I don't think any of that will happen, but we will see.

I also don't know who this "they" you are talking about is. It is very likely that his hospital told him they didn't want this attention and he agreed to take the video down.

the Japanese response is based on anime fights and the people will be totally overwhelmed and on the brink of defeat but then will unleash a new and previously unseen power level and beat the coronavirus

I realized I worded this poorly. As I said I'm currently a bit upset. By "they" I mean the amorphous form of social pressure that is often employed. Usually someone will lean on the employer or affiliate, who in turn will then lean on the person saying the thing they don't want to be said. It is usually not in the form of threats and the "leaning" is usually worded in a quite civil manner - but the message of "fall back in line, or else.." is usually quite explicit.
