Yeah, it's also I think the last one under the old AC style. It was pretty well received if memory serves, though that might've only been because it was following Unity.

If I remember correctly Unity made them realize it was bad business to be churning them out so quickly (as in costing them money), so they took their time a bit more with Syndicate while I assume another team built the new engine that they used for Origins and Odyssey.

Syndicate is very good, it's another rear end Creed in the Ezio Trilogy mould but it's really very well done, I'm about 20% done with Unity and Syndicate is far better, I got up to 99% sync iirc.

I think the DLC is missions, weapons and outfits. No additions that integrate into the main campaign in such a way that they would be unmissable.

I got the base version of AC: Syndicate free with my graphics card near release and really enjoyed it, got about 50 hours out of it getting to 99% sync. Never bothered with the DLC but the Dreadful Crimes stuff looked interesting (there are a couple taster in the base game), an rear end Creed game at the time was the last place I expected to see murder mysteries where you have to use your head.

It's definitely better than Revolutions, 3 and Unity.

I would have been far happier with Syndicate if I never played that DLC.

The Last Majaraja was ok, if not terribly inspired. Crime investigations were terrible on the JtR dlc, so I'm actually glad that the investigation DLC wasn't part of the season pass for some reason.

Syndicate has you going on ghost hunting missions for Charles Dickens and helping out labor activists for Carl Marx, so playing it is basically Praxis.

Edit:By "helping out" I mean murdering Capitalists.

They hosed that up royally, by making the Templars responsible for the Revolution.. They had an era that basically gave them everything they could need for an interesting story ("What if the Assassins actually achieved a society of freedom and anarchy, but it backfires horribly?") and tossed it all out the window so that you could sulk while hunting down a previous incarnation of David Bowie. That's not a joke, that's literal canon in the lore of this game. Admittedly, it's a pretty cool piece of canon, but still. They also removed the non-lethal options, so you come across as a psychopath who murders the poor to restore balance.

EDIT: Like, seriously, the whole period of the Terror should have been a highpoint for the series because it fits the theme so well. For game after game, you're killing people for the greater good and the belief that terrorism against those who force their will upon others will gift the people with the responsibility to make their lives better. Then someone comes and takes that idea to its conclusion, becoming a new tyrant in the proces. It should be a game about the Assassins winning a pyrrhic victory, finally reaching the endgame of their creed (a state of anarchy in which the nothing is true, because the old truths are abandoned, and everything is permitted as the people are free to build their own system out of the ashes of the old) and seeing the whole thing fall apart because people don't need Templars to dick each other over. You could take that story in so many interesting directions, and Unity threw them all out of the window as soon as it got the chance.

Play Syndicate, though, because it rules.

One of these days I'll end up playing the rest of the AC series, but after AC3 went and took no real perspective on the American revolution, with Templars on both sides and doing nothing with Freemasons, it was obvious that the writers didn't have the guts to meaningfully weigh in on important historical events. Connor was just really super into an independent America for no clear reason, which was awkward when his tribe allied with the British since they knew that the independent Americans would not honor border treaties and conditions would worsen a lot with independence, which they did.

So it kinda makes sense that they'd retreat further into the past to time periods without presently relevant ideology, which is a shame, since that squanders a fair amount of the freerunning system in eras when people weren't building as tall.

You’re surprised they tried to milk initial sales and then microtransactions? That’s the go-to business plan for MMOs for a while now.

-Initial cost
-Free month to month with premium subscription
-Microtransactions
-Remove initial cost a couple years down the line to pick up everyone else they can who might make microtransactions.
