Well that was pretty miserable. Horrendous dialogue, worse art direction - which is surprising since the show has been quite pretty so far.

Can anyone explain what the gently caress the difference between killing Vajazzle and beaming out is compared to beaming out then beaming back to kill her? And why exactly would leaving her alive stop her putting a bounty out on the people who robbed her anyway?

It's tonal whiplash too, hard to get into goofy Space Pimp Rios when you're coming right off the back of a live vivisection and Seven... mercy killing Icheb?... I guess he couldn't be saved?

I thought we were picking up a little bit with 4 but that was worse than 3.

We're officially half way through and our characters are still playing catch up to poo poo the audience knew in ep 1.

There were moments in this episode where picard kinda sounded like picard and it began to feel something close to star trek.

But it's still 80% poop.

Sad to see any character from Voyager done dirty like that (RIP Icheb), but that's just my own irrational love for all the characters on that particular incarnation of trek. I do wish the show was significantly less predictable and not hitting us over the head with foreshadowing, but I have to admire how much they're building up the big secret of the series. Finding out that real good synths are such a bad thing that you kill your lover just for knowing that secret is a BIG buildup, to the point that while "This will lead to the Borg, and also probably the Romulans created the Borg" is about the only sensible big reveal I can envision, it's also still not a big enough deal for me to buy it as secret knowledge that's big/horrifying enough for Agnes to do what she does."

I did think it was a tidy bit of writing that Agnes' panic attack is clearly more about what she feels she has to do to Maddox if they save him, and not just "OMG how to transporters work and I can't deal with high stress stuff." That's a sensible bit of payoff there. I was worried about them redoing the "lover is a spy" thing, but this clearly wasn't that so I'm okay with how it all turned out.

Also I just found out about those hot takes that MorgaineDax referred to, certainly makes me not mind the casting choices they made.

Welp, I was wondering why they didn't bring him back since he's all over that poo poo on Twitter.

Way to tug at my heartstrings though, I loved Icheb as a character and all that buildup on Voyager just to murder him, goddamn.

The Voyager theme motif playing as Seven goes all Rambo was pretty loving hilarious.

Ah I missed the theme kicking in there, gonna go check that out again.

Edit: Doesn't sound quite like the theme to me, but I could pick up some elements of it in there, mostly the drums.

I feel like with all the sad times and intensity so far, Picard going to see (guess I'll spoil it since it was in the trailers) Riker and Troi is just going to be all happiness, fond memories, and overall saccharine feelings as we see some characters who haven't been through some serious poo poo since we last saw them.

Also, while I'm not encouraging people who toss out bad internet hot takes get work in the shows I like, I do want to express regret that Icheb wasn't played by the same actor. (Not really much of a spoiler here, but I'll tag it anyway): It already hit me pretty hard, and seeing the same actor in that situation would have really turned a shocking scene into a proper gut punch.

Yeah Picard is very much being presented as an outright mystery show, and if you don't have a good secret to be revealed as part of that it's going to be really easy to make the whole show a major letdown. I'm such a fan of the TNG era shows that every bit that we're seeing of that universe 20 or so years later is catnip to me, so even if the reveal turns out to be incredibly lame I can't imagine I'll end up not liking Picard.

I think we have to find out the secret at the end of this season, but whatever it is will naturally lead in to what the next season will focus on. I mean, that really is just T.V. show writing 101 right there, but hey overall this show has just been "pretty standard tropes, but in Trek and done well with Patrick Stewart owning scenes" so following that kind of standard formula makes sense. Also, I'd be absolutely on board with the plot developing to where Picard and co. switch from wanting to save Data's kids to wanting to help destroy them, basically buying in to the ideology that the Zhat'Vash are selling once they're all clued in on why they're so hardcore against synths. Though hell, if I'm tossing fantasy theories out there then having almost everyone buy into the Zhat'Vash mission EXCEPT Picard and Elnar, and ending the season with them stranded somewhere, left to die, or in some kind of peril sounds on paper like the best cliffhanger Trek's done since Best of Both Worlds.

We've seen "gotta save the girl" stories a bunch of times, I'm pretty on board with a "oh poo poo the bad guys are right, we gotta kill the girl" story twist.

That was really good, I liked it a lot.

A bit of an odd choice to open with Icheb's death, though - would have worked better if we'd only seen that when Seven told Picard about it.

I loved the little scene between Picard and Seven before she beamed down again.

The pacing is just so much better when we're not cutting back to the Cube every other scene.

That was fun, except for poor Icheb. At least he got to be in Starfleet. It's a shame 7 went for revenge, but kind of hard to blame her given what happened. Also no cube this episode, nice.

The silly dressing up and Picard's outrageous accent I am very much on board with. Gangsters in Star Trek have pretty much always been fun

Agreed with those saying that if the terrible secret turns out to be poo poo it will be very disappointing after all this buildup, Enough to get Agnes to murder her lover? Must be some heavy poo poo. Also lol I totally buy that creep Bruce Maddox would get into a relationship with his much younger subordinate. but I've enjoyed the journey to get there so far.

Casting- not bringing back the Icheb actor makes total sense after those hot takes, what an idiot. If you want to get cast on Star Trek maybe don't say reprehensible stuff about one of the current main cast? But any reason they changed actor for Maddox?

Elnor is fantastic. Not as fantastic as revenge minded Seven though :black101:

I wonder who is buying up all those borg implants.

I guess Commodore Oh showed Agnes the super secret truth and that's why she's on board for killing Maddox and presumably Soji. The Rios line about not vetting her and trusting her in an earlier episode was good foreshadowing.

That's what I meant about being tonally off.

Saving that as a reveal for Seven's motivations after a lighter heist caper would have been a gut punch. Instead it just soured the mood for the goofy stuff that followed. And the awful dialogue between her and Vajazzle was just telling us poo poo we already knew. Characters just constantly catching up to the audience. Nothing in that confrontation made any sense, and requires every character to be stupid for it to work.

It's a bit of a slog that every character has to be miserable if they want to appear in Picard, I wonder what horrible poo poo had to have happened to Troi and Riker if they're making an appearance.

I don't know guys, this one really stretched my patience with this show. We've had maybe 2 episodes worth of story and a lot of cheap drama filler. I've been watching season 1 of The Terror (since I read the book the first season is based on, no idea what season 2 is since its apparently unrelated) and by 4 of 10 you are well into the weeds of the plot with a huge cast of characters, plenty of flashbacks and a lot of well dramatised exposition to establish a time and place that's probably not too familiar for most viewers, and that's a relatively "slow" paced show that's also extremely bleak.

Check out the The Terror season 1 if you're interested in a bit of historical fiction with a supernatural bent.

it's ruining picard the character for me right now so i'm just not gonna watch any more because the show stinks, and i can forget about it and just enjoy the real picard of TNG.

discovery was bad and i stopped watching, but they got me for picard on the promise of old favourite characters returning in a capacity that wasn't just a reboot. i was looking forward to a continuation of the star trek i actually like.

instead, they've dismantled what was distinct and enjoyable about star trek, populated the show with a bunch of boring or unlikable new characters (exception for laris), and the two who have returned so far - picard and seven of nine - don't behave or sound anything like their previous characters. the actors are just playing themselves, with space props.

if they had replaced everything i liked about star trek with something i also liked, then great, but it's not been like that. we don't even have a gripping plot because they are dead set on stringing out this mystery to the point that very little actually happens from week to week, and it's all in service of a reveal which i am certain will fail to justify the sacrifice of actually writing compelling episodes.

i'll listen out for future star trek stuff that people say is legitimately better than discovery and picard, but i stopped watching discovery after s1 and haven't missed it, and now i'll just stop picard a bit earlier because it clearly isn't the show for me. i guess i just had to get out some last negativity before i do the best thing for everyone and zip my lid about this show i'm no longer watching.

That's a shame, but I wasn't too excited for it and it's odd they didn't pick another book by the same author for their anthology. Seems like such a weird choice to make up something completely unrelated. Should have left it at one season, but yes luckily it's a completely self contained story.
