Even if they fail in some cases, everyone on that cruise ship was going to be be infected eventually. So long as the infection doesn't spread outside of quarantine it was probably the right thing to do and maybe saved lives. Cruise ship as quarantine was a good idea but it didn't work for some reason
Some doctor said they didn't have separated green and red areas for uninfected and infected, they didn't require protective gear, people were talking to each other from balconies etc. Basically it wasn't done properly. He said he'd treated patients during SARS and never was scared but after boarding the ship he was frightened when he saw what was going on because there wasn't a true quarantined area defined. You walk on and everything is possibly contaminated.

It they seize a few hotels and quarantine the healthy people on land, with a window room, they can avoid at least majority of the infection. I even said this on r/japan when the infected number was around 100.

True quarantine is already a lost cause. It could have worked if the disease only spread when the carrier was symptomatic because then you have a chance of identifying and isolating the right people. NEJM has a case report from Germany though where asymptotic patients were infecting others 2 days before any symptoms appeared.

That case report was later identified to be majorly flawed; the person they reported as asymptomatic had actually described having a bunch of symptoms (fever, cough, etc)

Not really rich, no, but there aren't a ton of working class people that can pay to fly to Asia and then get on a cruise ship for a week or so, especially if they're paying for a family. Any Americans on that ship are going to be pretty far to one end of income distribution.

I was mocked for even suggesting that the quarantine should be broken because it clearly wasn't working. They certainly waited long enough.

I realize they had procedures they thought would work, and that the ship itself provides an effective quarantine from the rest of the population, but cruise ships are infamous as incubators and spreaders of disease and clearly that was the case here.

BTW that church with the infected people is apparently some kind of bizarre cult. More than half of all cases in Korea are now from that cult, somehow that the woman infected dozens of people in one visit.

This would have happened in my vanilla Methodist chruch in Daejeon as well because every one gets up a greets everyone else with a handshake and "peace be with you". That's more than enough contact to transmit from what I've read.

People from Australia could do flights + that cruise for $1500-2000 AUD per person, west coast USA if there was a sale I’m sure would be similar.
